Pertamina New & Renewable Energy (Pertamina NRE) officially\nlaunched the Bioethanol Development Centre in Tegineneng, Pesawaran\nRegency, Lampung, on Monday (14\/9). This facility has been developed as\na pilot-scale development and testing platform for bioethanol, covering\nfeedstock development, cultivation, technology testing, and the\nvalidation of bioethanol production processes.<\/p>\n
The launch was attended by various stakeholders from the government,\nPertamina, industry, academia, and strategic partners. Notable attendees\nincluded the Deputy Minister of Investment and Downstreaming\/Deputy Head\nof the Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) Todotua Pasaribu, the\nPresident Commissioner of PT Pertumnina (Persero) Mochamad Iriawan, the\nDirector of Risk Management of PT Pertamina (Persero) Ahmad Siddik\nBadruddin, the President Director of Pertamina NRE John Anis, the\nGovernor of Lampung Province Rahmat Mirzani Djausal, as well as the\nPresident Director of PT Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indonesia (TMMIN)\nNandi Julyanto, and the President Director of Toyota Tsusho Indonesia\n(TTI) Toru Murakami.<\/p>\n
President Director of Pertamina NRE, John Anis, explained that the\ntechnological objective of the Bioethanol Development Centre is to\nprioritise a multi-feedstock and multi-generation technology approach.\nThis involves utilising various potential raw materials and both\nfirst-generation (1G) and second-generation (2G) bioethanol production\ntechnologies. This approach is expected to optimise local resource\npotential while supporting the development of the national bioethanol\necosystem.<\/p>\n
The launch momentum was also marked by the signing of two Memorandums\nof Understanding (MoU). The first is a Joint Agreement between Pertamina\nNRE and the Lampung Provincial Government for the development of\nagribusiness, energy security, and food security in Lampung\nProvince.<\/p>\n
The second is an MoU between Pertamina NRE, TMMIN, TTI, and the\nResearch Association of Biomass Innovation for Next Generation\nAutomobile Fuels (raBit) to explore the technical and commercial\npotential of sustainable bioethanol production and utilisation in\nIndonesia. This includes feasibility studies, technology development and\nutilisation, as well as the exchange of knowledge and experience.<\/p>\n
The Deputy Minister of Investment and Downstreaming\/Deputy Head of\nBKPM, Todotua Pasaribu, stated that bioethanol development can create an\necosystem that brings together agriculture, industry, technology,\ninvestment, and society into a single renewable energy-based economic\nchain.<\/p>\n
\u201cLampung has 430,000 KL, with a main strategy of reactivation,\nsynergy with PTPN, integrated sorghum development for first-generation\n(1G) and second-generation (2G), the pilot Bioethanol Development\nCentre, cassava downstreaming, corn downstreaming, and factory\nconversion, so that it can support energy security,\u201d said Todotua, as\nquoted from a written statement on Monday (14\/9\/2026).<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the President Commissioner of PT Pertamina (Persero),\nMochammad Iriawan, expressed his appreciation to the Deputy Minister of\nInvestment and Downstreaming\/Deputy Head of BKPM and the Governor of\nLampung for the successful establishment of the Bioethanol Development\nCentre.<\/p>\n
Furthermore, John explained that sorghum is one of the interesting\nraw materials to develop due to its competitive productivity and harvest\ncycle. \u201cWhat is interesting about sorghum, besides its productivity, is\nthat its cycle can allow for three harvests per year,\u201d said John.<\/p>\n
The development of sorghum in Lampung is directed towards a\nmulti-generation approach, utilising juice as a feedstock for\nfirst-generation (1G) bioethanol, while the remaining biomass, such as\nthe stalks, can be developed as feedstock for second-generation (2G)\nbioethanol.<\/p>\n
John explained that the Bioethanol Development Centre in Lampung is\ndeveloped as a pilot facility with a bioethanol production capacity of\nup to 60 kilolitres per year. This facility will be used to test various\ncombinations of feedstock and technology, ranging from pre-treatment,\nhydrolysis, fermentation, and distillation to dehydration, including the\npre-treatment stages for 2G feedstock processing.<\/p>\n
\u201cPertamina NRE is very committed to supporting the President\u2019s\nprogramme and the great ambition to achieve a production of 1 million\nkilolitres of bioethanol per year using a multi-generation system,\u201d said\nJohn.<\/p>\n
The launch of the Bioethanol Development Centre also marks the\nbeginning of Lampung\u2019s development as an end-to-end bioethanol\ndevelopment hub, ranging from feedstock development and cultivation to\nprocessing and technology validation.
