LAMPUNG \u2014 Pertamina New & Renewable Energy (Pertamina NRE) has\nlaunched a Bioethanol Development Centre with a production capacity of\n60 kilolitres per year in Tegineneng, Pesawaran Regency, Lampung, on\nMonday (14\/09\/2026). The facility serves as a pilot centre to develop\nand test bioethanol production technologies, covering everything from\nfeedstock development and cultivation to the validation of production\nprocesses.<\/p>\n
The launch involved various stakeholders, including government\nofficials, academics, and strategic partners. Notable attendees included\nthe Deputy Minister of Investment and Downstreaming\/Deputy Head of the\nInvestment Coordinating Board (BKPM) Todotua Pasaribu, the President\nCommissioner of PT Pertamina Mochamad Iradwan, the President Director of\nPertamina NRE John Anis, and the Governor of Lampung Rahmat Mirzani\nDjausal, alongside executives from Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indonesia\nand Toyota Tsusho Indonesia.<\/p>\n
John Anis, President Director of Pertamina NRE, stated that the\ndevelopment centre employs a multi-feedstock and multi-generation\ntechnology approach. This method allows for bioethanol development by\nutilising diverse raw materials and both first-generation (1G) and\nsecond-generation (2G) production technologies. He noted that this\napproach is aimed at optimising local resource potential while\nsupporting the formation of a national bioethanol ecosystem.<\/p>\n
The launch of the Bioethanol Development Centre was also marked by\nthe signing of two Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs). The first is an\nagreement between Pertamina NRE and the Lampung Provincial Government to\ndevelop agribusiness, energy security, and food security in the\nregion.<\/p>\n
The second MoU was signed between Pertamina NRE, PT Toyota Motor\nManufacturing Indonesia, Toyota Tsusho Indonesia, and the Research\nAssociation of Biomass Innovation for Next Generation Automobile Fuels\n(raBit) to explore the technical and commercial potential of sustainable\nbioethanol production in Indonesia. This collaboration includes\nfeasibility studies, technology development, and the exchange of\nknowledge regarding bioethanol.<\/p>\n
Deputy Minister of Investment and Downstreaming\/Deputy Head of BKPM,\nTodotua Pasaribu, remarked that bioethanol development can create an\necosystem that integrates the agricultural, industrial, technological,\nand investment sectors into a single renewable energy-based economic\nchain. He highlighted Lampung\u2019s potential, noting strategies such as\nsynergy with PTPN, integrated sorghum development, and the downstreaming\nof cassava and maize to support energy security.<\/p>\n
Sorghum has been identified as a key feedstock due to its competitive\nproductivity and harvest cycle. John Anis noted that sorghum is\nparticularly attractive because it can be harvested up to three times a\nyear. Under the multi-generation approach, sorghum juice will be used as\nfeedstock for first-generation (1G) bioethanol, while the remaining\nstalks and biomass will be developed for second-generation (2G)\nbioethanol.<\/p>\n
The Bioethanol Development Centre in Lampung will function as a pilot\nfacility to test various combinations of feedstock and production\ntechnologies, including pre-treatment, hydrolysis, fermentation,\ndistillation, and dehydration.
