Pertamina compensates residents over pollution<\/p>\n

State oil company Pertamina paid Rp 135 million (US$16,071) in
\ncompensation to residents of Kramat subdistrict, Central Jakarta,
\nfor environmental damages caused by a suspected leak in the
\nunderground storage tank of a gasoline station on Jl. Kramat
\nRaya.<\/p>\n
The leaked fuel has polluted water wells in houses in
\ncommunity units 5 and 7 in the subdistrict.<\/p>\n
Pertamina spokesman Awi Adil said over the weekend that the
\nmoney would cover water pipe installation from city water
\noperator PD PAM Jaya to 52 connection points, two months' worth
\nof water purchased from private vendors amounting to Rp 150,000
\nper family per month, three months' worth of water from the water
\ncompany and the installation of electric water pumps to replace
\nthe households' manual water pumps.<\/p>\n
The agreement also includes Pertamina's obligation to repair
\nthe leak in the gas station's storage tank, after which a
\nhydrostatic test must be conducted by the City Environmental
\nManagement Agency (BPLHD).<\/p>\n
\"The residents have agreed not to sue Pertamina in connection
\nwith the suspected pollution,\" Adil was quoted by Antara as
\nsaying.<\/p>\n
The gas station is currently under renovation. Built in 1973,
\nthe gas station's underground storage tanks will have double
\nwalls.<\/p>\n
Adil guaranteed that the storage tanks at the renovated gas
\nstation would not leak in the future.<\/p>",
