'Perez will not come to RI'<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: Former president Abdurrahman \"Gus Dur\" Wahid said on
\nFriday that Israeli Minister of Foreign Affairs Shimon Perez
\nwould not come to Indonesia because of the security situation in
\nthe Middle East.<\/p>\n
\"It is impossible for Shimon Perez to come here because of the
\nunfavorable situation there (Israel),\" Abdurrahman said in
\nJakarta.<\/p>\n
Abdurrahman is a member of the Shimon Perez Foundation, which
\npromotes peace across the world.<\/p>\n
Perez was invited by the youth group of the Nahdlatul Ulama
\n(NU) Muslim organization to speak at a seminar. Titled \"NU: Grand
\nDesign Between Cultural and Global Interests\", the seminar is
\nscheduled for Saturday.<\/p>\n
The Israeli minister had confirmed his presence at the
\nseminar, which also will be attended by Abdurrahman, the former
\nNU chairman.<\/p>\n
The invitation extended to Perez has drawn protests from
\nMuslim hard-liners, including the Indonesian Committee for the
\nSolidarity of the Islamic World and the Justice Party.<\/p>\n
Responding to the protests, NU chairman Hasyim Muzadi told the
\nchairman of the NU youth group, Maksum Zuber, not to use the
\nNahdlatul Ulama name for his activities.<\/p>\n
A visit by Perez would not bring any benefits, but would only
