Perbanas urged to hold special congress soon<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Some members of the Federation of Private
\nDomestic Banks (Perbanas) have urged the federation's executive
\nboard to hold a special congress to change the its leadership.<\/p>\n
Haga Bank's director, Timothy Marnandus, said on Saturday that
\nit was very urgent to appoint a new chairman and secretary-
\ngeneral to fill the position left vacant following the
\nresignation of Perbanas' chairman Subowo.<\/p>\n
\"We want the executive board to hold an extraordinary congress
\nas soon as possible,\" Timothy told Antara news agency after a
\nmeeting with Subowo and the chairman of Perbanas' advisory board
\nThomas Suyatno.<\/p>\n
\"In the meeting, we also discussed our complaints concerning
\nthe government's uncertain policies in handling the banking
\nindustry,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Timothy said the advisory board agreed with the special
\ncongress and proposed the meeting to be held on Sept. 18.<\/p>\n
He said that Perbanas' members still wanted Subowo to chair
\nthe federation but the chairman refused his nomination.<\/p>\n
Subowo, a Bank Central Asia (BCA) executive, said he would not
\nrun in the next election because under the federation's statutes,
\nmembers and executives should come from private banks.<\/p>\n
BCA is controlled by Lim Sioe Liong and family but its
\nmanagement has been taken over by the Indonesian Banking
\nRestructuring Agency because the liquidity credits it received
\nfrom Bank Indonesia, the central bank, have exceeded the
