The Indonesian Advocates Association SAI (Peradi SAI) has declared that lawyers can no longer be generalists handling all matters in the modern era, urging specialisation in specific competencies due to the increasing complexity of legal challenges driven by rapid technological growth. During their National Working Meeting in Jakarta, Peradi SAI introduced multi-theme seminars to strengthen this focus and positioned the event as a stepping stone towards revising Law No. 18 of 2003 on Advocates, which they deem inadequate for current realities. The association supports the House of Representatives' Commission III's revision plans and aims to serve as a key source of ideas for the government and legislature in shaping the future of the legal profession.

JAKARTA - The Indonesian Advocates Association SAI (Peradi SAI)
states that lawyers in the current era can no longer be all-round
advocates handling various matters. Peradi SAI General Chairman Harry
Ponto assesses that lawyers should now have specialisation in certain
competencies. “It is no longer the time in this current era for
all-round lawyers. Yes, they come and whatever it is, we can handle it.
It can’t be like that anymore,” said Harry at the Peradi SAI National
Working Meeting at the Grand Sahid Jaya Hotel, Jakarta, on Friday
(8/5/2026). According to Harry, current legal challenges are becoming
increasingly complex along with the rapid growth of technology. He
stated that specialisation does not hinder a lawyer in practising their
profession; instead, it allows them to delve deeper into the field they
pursue. “So, what we want is that truly, lawyers in the future are
required to have specialisation,” said Harry. As a concrete form of
strengthening this specialisation, this Peradi SAI National Working
Meeting features an innovation in the form of multi-theme seminars. In
addition, the national meeting is also seen as an entry point towards
revising Law No. 18 of 2003 on Advocates. According to him, that law is
no longer adequate to address realities in the field, so Peradi SAI
supports the plans of the House of Representatives’ Commission III to
revise the Advocates Law. Harry hopes that Peradi SAI can become one of
the main sources of thought for the government and legislature in
formulating the new direction of the advocate profession in the
future.
",
