A number of provinces and regencies have already finished
\ntheir direct elections for regional heads without court disputes,
\nand some others are slated for inauguration later.<\/p>\n
The regional direct election has cost a lot of energy and
\nfunds in an effort to develop democracy, the first of their kind
\nin 60 years after the nation's independence. Therefore, the
\nelected heads of regencies are now called people's regents.<\/p>\n
The question is: What is meant by this term and how should
\nthey perform their duties and manage their administrations as
\npeople's leaders?<\/p>\n
As directly elected regents, they should become leaders who
\nalways communicate with local people particularly after they have
\nassumed their official responsibilities. In brief, people's
\nregents are those who empathize with their communities.<\/p>\n
