People's economy neglected?<\/p>\n

President Abdurrahman Wahid's move to invite conglomerates to
\nreturn to the country for the sake of economic recovery is a
\ndeviation from the economic reform program. The reform program is
\naimed at changing the Indonesian economic system from one based
\non conglomerates to a people's economic system which primarily
\ninvolves small and middle-sized entrepreneurs.<\/p>\n
During former president B.J. Habibie's rule, serious attention
\nwas paid to the people's economic movement, as demonstrated by
\nformer minister of cooperatives Adi Sasono. There was no regard
\nfor the conglomerates (either those which had fled Indonesia or
\nwhich remained in the country). It is true that some criticism
\nwas launched against the misappropriation of social safety net
\nfunds, but the losses incurred were small compared to what was
\nmisappropriated by the conglomerates during the New Order era.<\/p>\n
If Abdurrahman's government really loves the people then it
\nshould enhance their welfare and should not guarantee that the
\nconglomerates can resume their business activities to revive the
\nIndonesian economy.<\/p>\n
The new minister of cooperatives, H. Zarkasih Noer, seems to
\nbe sluggish in following up his predecessor's agenda.<\/p>\n
