People protest deafening sound from Ramayana's loudspeakers<\/p>\n
BOGOR (JP): The Ramayana Department Store has stopped their
\nnoisy advertising following strong protests from residents living
\nin the vicinity over the deafening sound from the store's
\nloudspeakers.<\/p>\n
R. Soetami Koestomo, one of residents living near the chain-
\ndepartment store, said yesterday the store stopped their noisy
\nadvertising on Wednesday at the order of township officials.<\/p>\n
Residents of Pabaton subdistrict in Central Bogor petitioned
\nthe mayor's office about the blaring advertisements coming from
\nthe department store, which have been annoying them for the past
\nfour months.<\/p>\n
Soetami said that residents living in the surrounding area met
\nwith the township's secretary, Rumawan Sadli, recently and
\nsubmitted a petition containing over 100 signatures.<\/p>\n
Last March the department store at Pasar Kebon Kembang on Jl.
\nDewi Sartika began a fiery advertising campaign using
\nloudspeakers installed on top of their building.<\/p>\n
The loudspeakers blared advertisements daily from early in the
\nmorning until about eight in the evening at a piercing volume,
\ndisturbing the personal privacy of residents in the vicinity.<\/p>\n
"My house is about 200 meters away and I can still here them,"
\nSoetami said.<\/p>\n
She said area residents had previously approached Ramayana
\nmanagement four times with their complaints but they went
\nunheeded.<\/p>\n
According to Soetami, the store branch manager, Eko Suprihadi,
\nonce told area residents that he had to undertake such measures
\nin order to reach sales targets.<\/p>\n
Ramayana department store could not be reached for comment.<\/p>\n
Ramayana's actions are highly questionable since other
\ndepartment stores, such as Matahari and Internusa in Bogor
\nmarket, do not inflict neighboring residents with the similar
\nkind of ruckus.<\/p>\n
As a final resolve, the residents took their grievances to the
\ntown mayor office accusing the department store of disturbing the
\npeace under disturbance law Stbld. 1926 No. 226.<\/p>\n
When asked how she felt about the latest developments, Soetami
\nsaid area residents were encouraged but remain wary because
\nRamayana might be recalcitrant and continue the practice again.<\/p>\n
However she is holding onto the assurances of the township
\nsecretary who said that he will revoke the stores license if it
\nignores the warnings.<\/p>\n
Soetami and a number of other residents are scheduled to meet
\nwith Mayor Suratman sometime next week to convey the matter
