People flee homes after rumors<\/p>\n
MAKASSAR, South Sulawesi: Thousands of people left their homes
\nin the Banggai islands regency and fled to Luwuk Banggai town in
\nthe Banggai in mainland Central Sulawesi following rumors of
\nfresh strong tremors.<\/p>\n
Mahmud Dg. Masikki, assistant to the South Sulawesi provincial
\nsecretary, said he had no idea where the rumors of aftershocks
\ncame from.<\/p>\n
"The people have been transported by the Navy's KRI Multatuli
\nand KRI Kerapu," Mahmud said. "They are so traumatized that the
\nrumors of fresh tremors really scared them."<\/p>\n
Some of the refugees are now camping at the Nasional Building,
\nwhile others are staying at relatives' homes.<\/p>\n
Mahmud said more food and medicine were needed.<\/p>\n
Speaking about the death toll, Mahmud said 45 people had been
\ndeclared dead in the quake, which also inflicted at least Rp 100
\nbillion in financial losses.<\/p>\n
"Three babies were among the victims. They were three months
\nold, two days old and one day old respectively," he said.
