We have, of late, been often startled by street brawls not
\ninvolving secondary school students anymore but adult citizens.
\nOne example is a brawl between Rawajati and Pengadegan residents
\nin the Casablanca area, Jakarta. The cause was simple:
\nfirecrackers.<\/p>\n
Outside the capital things are not better. In Surakarta
\nrecently, motorcyclists transformed a number of streets into a
\nrace course. Riots broke out. A police station was destroyed.<\/p>\n
Why are people so easily angered nowadays? It is Ramadhan now,
\nthe month of fasting for Muslims, who are obliged to contain
\ntheir anger and emotions. It is also yuletide for Christians.<\/p>\n
Can the outrage be ascribed to the pressures of the social,
\npolitical and economic upheavals in Indonesia? If that is the
\ncause, it is highly dangerous. The Jakarta governor said that a
\nban on firecracker sales would not solve the problem.<\/p>\n
Some circles predict further upheavals, chaotic conditions. It
\ndoes not seem farfetched.<\/p>\n
I subscribe to a recommendation by Gadjah Mada University that
\nin the period leading to the general election, the contending
\nparties should not hold campaigns by mobilizing crowds, unless
\nthey want chaos and unrest in Indonesia.<\/p>\n
It is, indeed, a pity that the university's recommendation has
\nnot been responded to by the leaders of self-avowed big parties.
\nThey are now concentrating on obtaining support.<\/p>\n
The mobilization of crowds is very effective in influencing
\nvoters psychologically, but in view of our common good, the
\nuniversity's suggestion needs to be responded to immediately.<\/p>\n
I appeal to party leaders to follow the recommendation.<\/p>\n
