        "content": "<p>People called on to fight AIDS<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA: The Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies in Southeast<br>\nAsian countries called on the public \"to step up efforts to fight<br>\nAIDS\" at the conclusion of their three-day international meeting<br>\nhere on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>\"We have agreed to increase our role in preventing an AIDS<br>\nepidemic in Southeast Asia by campaigning against the spreading<br>\nillness,\" said Iyang D. Sukandar, secretary general of the<br>\nIndonesian Red Cross.<\/p>\n<p>Sixty delegates from the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies<br>\nin Southeast Asia, and also from the Brussels-based Red Cross<br>\nInternational Federation, attended the meeting.<\/p>\n<p>Discrimination against individuals with AIDS was another<br>\nconcern for the societies, which voiced their commitment to wage<br>\na war against any acts of discrimination.<\/p>\n<p>Didier Cherpitel, the secretary-general of the Red Cross<br>\nInternational Federation, said the Red Cross, the Red Crescent<br>\nand the International Federation had committed to overcome the<br>\npandemic through prevention, care, treatment and support to those<br>\naffected.<\/p>\n<p>A global campaign to combat discrimination against individuals<br>\nwith AIDS will be launched during World Red Cross Day on May 8.<br>\n-- JP<\/p>",
