Penitentiary guard arrested for drugs<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Police have arrested a guard at Cipinang
\nPenitentiary for his role in distributing drugs to prisoners,
\nJakarta Police Criminal Investigation chief Sr. Supt. Harry
\nMontolalu said on Monday.<\/p>\n
"The guard, Mardiono, was suspected of smuggling drugs into
\nthe prison, which were then distributed among the prisoners,"
\nHarry said from police headquarters.<\/p>\n
He said that Mardiono, arrested last Thursday, had been
\ncooperating with an African prisoner named Kofe, who acted as the
\ndrug distributor.<\/p>\n
Harry said the police launched an investigation based on a
\ntip-off on the ongoing drug distribution at the prison.<\/p>\n
After several days of surveillance, Harry said, Mardiono was
\nseen meeting another man, also African, identified as Bobby,
\nacross the street in front of the penitentiary on Thursday.<\/p>\n
"The man handed Mardiono a package wrapped in plastic and
\nMardiono later brought it into the prison," Harry said. "He gave
\nthe package to Kofe who then handed him two similar packages."<\/p>\n
Several minutes later, Mardiono left the prison with the two
\npackages, Harry said. However, Bobby had left the area.<\/p>\n
Police then apprehended Mardiono and opened the two packages.<\/p>\n
"The police found a total of Rp 21.3 million in the packages,"
\nHarry said.<\/p>\n
Harry said they were looking for Bobby. Kofe, who was sent to
\njail for drugs, could face more charges for his role in the
\nlatest incident, he said.<\/p>\n
There was no comment from prison authorities.<\/p>\n
Earlier on July, police apprehended two prisoners at Salemba
\nPrison in Central Jakarta for drug possession and seized 533
\necstasy pills, four plastic bags of shabu-shabu (crystal
\nmethamphetamine) weighing 15 grams, seven sedatives and some drug
\nparaphernalia.<\/p>\n
Following the arrest, another guard was questioned after
\nprisoners claimed they had bought the drugs from him. The case is
\nstill under investigation.(jaw)<\/p>",
