Pemuda Pancasila wants to improve image<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The nationalist youth organization Pemuda
\nPancasila (PP) is trying to polish its image and is asking the
\npublic to stop thinking of it as a group of hoodlums.<\/p>\n
The chief of the organization's Jambi branch, Edy Sitanggang,
\nsaid "such an impression should be discarded".<\/p>\n
"PP does not discount the possibility that some of its members
\ndo tolerate a roughneck system, but the number is relatively
\nsmall," Edy was quoted by Antara as saying.<\/p>\n
He was speaking Saturday at a PP regional meeting in Jambi.<\/p>\n
Edy said there was a widely held perception that the
\norganization often used roughneck tactics.<\/p>\n
But he said these were merely public misperceptions.<\/p>\n
He said vandalism was against the organizations' principles of
\ndefending the New Order and contributing to national development.<\/p>\n
Edy said PP would scrutinize its membership more closely and
\nthat the organization had never recommended its members look for
\nwork in places of ill-repute or work as bouncers.<\/p>\n
PP is one of the many youth organizations affiliated with the
\ndominant Golkar.<\/p>\n
Some of the organization's members have been jailed for being
\ntheir involvement in several fracases.<\/p>\n
In April, more than two dozen PP members were detained after
\nthey attacked five billiard houses in West Jakarta.<\/p>\n
They said their actions were part of their contribution to
\neliminate gambling. The members carried out the attacks wearing
\nthe organization's black-and-red military style uniform.<\/p>\n
But the PP's executive reportedly did not condone the attack
\nand dismissed the leader of the attack from the organization.
