Pelti will delay SEA Games training program until July<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Indonesian Tennis Association (Pelti) will
\ndelay its training program for the 20th Southeast Asian (SEA)
\nGames until July.<\/p>\n
Pelti spokesman Benny Mailili said on Wednesday that Pelti had
\ndecided in a meeting held on Tuesday evening and attended by
\nassociation chairman Tanri Abeng, to delay the training program
\nuntil after national selections from June 23 to June 26. Pelti
\nwill select eight of 19 players to take part in the Games.<\/p>\n
\"We won't have a selection for doubles players. The players
\nwill then take part in the SEA Games training program starting in
\nJuly.\"<\/p>\n
Benny said veteran players, including Andrian Raturandang and
\nmen's doubles specialist Sulistyo Wibowo, would be given the
\nchance to compete in the selection process.<\/p>\n
Besides Andrian and Sulistyo, eight men's players will
\nparticipate in the selections. They are: Suwandi, Edy
\nKusdaryanto, Hendri Susilo Pramono, Febi Widhiyanto, Dede
\nSuhendar, Bonit Wiryawan, Sebastian DaCosta and Yusmawan Fahmi.<\/p>\n
Eight players on the women's side will also take part in the
\nselections: Irawati Moerid Iskandar, Frederika Girsang,
\nMudarwati, Liza Andriyani, Wukirasih Sawondari, Dea Sumantri,
\nAngelique Widjaya and Romana Tedjakusuma.<\/p>\n
Indonesia's top player, Wynne Prakusya, has already earned a
\nplace in the Games due to her World Tennis Association ranking of
\n190.<\/p>\n
Benny said currently all players were free to train with their
\nfavorite coaches. But after they join the Pelti training program,
\ntwo coaches will train the men's squad and two will coach the
\nwomen's, with a head coach supervising the entire training.<\/p>\n
\"Coaching nominees must understand sports science. They will
\nhave to present their ideas in a meeting during the one-month
\ntraining program. The officials at the meeting will decide on the
\nmost feasible ideas,\" he said.<\/p>\n
The decision to hold such a meeting was made following protest
\nfrom a number of tennis players who refused to take part in
\nmultiple training programs supervised by different coaches. The
\ntraining programs were originally organized to prepare tennis
\nplayers for tournaments other than the SEA Games in Brunei
\nDarussalam from Aug. 7 to Aug. 15.<\/p>\n
Protests further mounted following allegations that a Pelti
\nofficial appointed his friends to sit on the committee overseeing
\nthe selection for the SEA Games and the Games training program.<\/p>\n
Benny said the allegation was made in an anonymous letter.<\/p>\n
The letter said Soedjono Timan, Pelti's official in charge of
\nathlete development, appointed Martina Widjaja and her
\nbrother-in-law, Aga Sumarna, to chair the committee.<\/p>\n
It also accused Soedjono of appointing officials and coaches
\nclose to Martina as committee members, including Glen Sugita,
\nDeddy Prasetyo, Suharyadi and his wife, Yayuk Basuki, Tintus A.
\nWibowo and his wife, Suzanna Anggarkusuma.<\/p>\n
Benny said Martina was still slated to lead the national team
\nto the SEA Games and would be assisted by Tien Indrajit and Aga.<\/p>\n
He also said the four coaches -- Suharyadi, Yayuk, Tintus and
\nSuzanna -- must take part in the presentations if they wanted to
\ncoach the national teams. (ivy)<\/p>",
