Pelti undecided on Davis Cup coach<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Indonesian Tennis Association (Pelti) was
\nunable to resolve on Wednesday a dispute over who to appoint as
\nthe Davis Cup team's coach.<\/p>\n
Pelti's official in charge of junior athlete development, Dedy
\nPrasetyo, suggested the deadlock could be broken if the six-
\nmember Davis Cup team trained with their preferred coaches.<\/p>\n
\"Tennis is an individual sport. So let the players train with
\ntheir favorite coaches. About a couple weeks before the matches
\nbegin, Pelti could pick up a nonplaying captain to develop team
\nwork,\" he said.<\/p>\n
As an example, Dedy cited the United States Davis Cup team,
\nwhose nonplaying captain does not immediately train all team
\nmembers.<\/p>\n
\"If the United States tennis association appointed Tim
\nGullikson as its nonplaying captain, should Andre Agassi be
\ntrained by him?\" he said.<\/p>\n
He said the nonplaying captain should be a former coach who
\nknew the team members' and opponents' skills so he or she could
\napply the best tactics for a match.<\/p>\n
\"The coaches will only support the nonplaying captain with
\ntheir opinions and ideas,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Pelti has invited six players -- Dede Suhendar Dinata,
\nSuwandi, Hendri Susilo Pramono, Sebastian DaCosta, Febi
\nWidhiyanto and Edy Kusdaryanto -- to join the training session
\nfor the Davis Cup.<\/p>\n
Only four players will be selected to play in the Davis Cup
\ntie against the Philippines at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Complex
\nin Manila from Feb. 4 to Feb. 6.<\/p>\n
The Philippines beat 4-1 for the first time during their five
\nencounters held here in April.<\/p>\n
Pelti's official in charge of athletes and regional
\ndevelopment, Sudjiono Timan, said on Monday that he would
\nprobably announce the name of the team's coach on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
Dedy, as well as former national tennis player Tintus Arianto
\nWibowo, were the front-runners for the position. They were
\nrespectively appointed as coach and nonplaying captain for the
\n1999 Davis Cup team.<\/p>\n
Dedy is currently coaching Dede, Hendri, Sebastian, Febi and
\nEdy, while Suwandi is trained by Tintus.<\/p>\n
Dede and Sebastian said on Monday that they preferred Dedy to
\ntake on the team coach role because he had good training methods
\nand communicated well with his players.<\/p>\n
The following day, Tintus withdrew from the Davis Cup
\nnomination, citing as reasons his age and family and time
\ncommitments.<\/p>\n
Suwandi, however, would not be drawn into speculation about
\nhis chances for the coaching job. \"No comment,\" he said curtly on
