Pelti rearranges training program after complaints<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Indonesian Tennis Association (Pelti) secretary-
\ngeneral Soegeng Sarjadi said on Thursday he would allow players
\nto be trained by their favorite coaches to avoid allegations of
\nfavoritism in long-term training programs and other preparations
\nfor the 20th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games.<\/p>\n
Soegeng made the remark after an anonymous letter circulated
\nin the association office alleged that the selection of training
\nprogram committee members was based on cronyism.<\/p>\n
"I will suggest to all the people, including KONI (National
\nSports Council) chairman Wismoyo Arismundar and the state
\nminister of youth affairs and sports Agung Laksono to change the
\ntraining system for individual sports like tennis," he said.<\/p>\n
"The training program system is no longer necessary in the
\nlong run because all tennis player have to make their own efforts
\nto get ATP ranking and to be world players. So it is the player
\nwho should make up his or her own mind on the sponsors or the
\ncoaches."<\/p>\n
The letter said that Soedjono Timan, who is in charge of
\nPelti's athlete development, had picked Martina Widjaja and her
\nbrother-in-law Aga Sumarna to lead the committee.<\/p>\n
It alleged that Soedjono had also appointed officials and
\ncoaches as committee members, including Glen Sugita, Deddy
\nPrasetyo, Suharyadi and wife Yayuk Basuki, Tintus A. Wibowo and
\nhis wife Suzana Anggarkusuma.<\/p>\n
The conflict continued as tennis players also protested the
\ntraining program. They refused to take part in multiple training
\nprograms with different coaches, organized to prepare them for
\ntournaments other than the SEA Games.<\/p>\n
Soegeng called on sports body officials to stop creating
\ndiscord.<\/p>\n
"Please stop the efforts (of spreading rumors). It's useless.
\nWe should better save our energy to develop our tennis," he said,
\nadding that the officials mentioned in the letter would not be
\nreplaced.<\/p>\n
The training program for women started on May 5. Pelti has
\nselected nine players to be trained for the SEA Games: Wynne
\nPrakusya, Irawati Moerid Iskandar, Frederika Girsang, Mudarwati,
\nLiza Andriyani, Wukirasih Sawondari, Dea Sumantri, Angelique
\nWidjaya and Romana Tedjakusuma.<\/p>\n
Eight mens players -- Suwandi, Edy Kusdaryanto, Hendri Susilo
\nPramono, Febi Widhiyanto, Dede Suhendar, Bonit Wiryawan,
\nSebastian DaCosta and Yusmawan Fahmi -- have been invited to join
\nthe training program.<\/p>\n
Soegeng said Pelti would trim the number of the players to
\neight: four men and four women. The 16 players, except for Wynne,
\nwould be selected in the Indonesia Masters tournament, scheduled
\nto be held after the June 7 general election.<\/p>\n
Wynne is included in the games team automatically due to her
\nWTA ranking.<\/p>\n
Soegeng said that after the tournament, the players would
\nreceive a three-week orientation course, during which they would
\nreceive instruction on tactics and teamwork.<\/p>\n
"We want to win as much as three gold medals from the women's
\nteam, men's doubles and mixed doubles. But we can change this
\nprediction after we evaluate the players' individual skills," he
