Pedophilic kiddnapping spree raises call for alert<\/p>\n

Parents are warned to be extra careful in watching their children
\nbecause the serial kidnappers, known as the Saputra brothers
\ngang, are ingenious and most likely pedophiles.<\/p>\n
Danardi Sosrosumihardjo, a psychiatrist at the University of
\nIndonesia, told The Jakarta Post on Monday that parents should be
\nparticularly alert if young men had approached family members
\nwithin the last month or two.<\/p>\n
"These Saputra brothers have high social skills, which make it
\neasy for them to win the trust of children and their parents," he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
He underlined that, considering the gang's modus operandi, it
\ncould be assumed that the brothers' main motive was of a sexual
\nnature with a certain fascination for young children, or
\npedophilia. Money was only a secondary motive, he said.<\/p>\n
Pedophiles usually establish an initial relationship of trust
\nand familiarity with their victims, and seldom confine their
\nmolestations and sexual assaults to only one child.<\/p>\n
Criminologist Erlangga Masdiana told the Post that kidnapping
\nwas categorized as a petty crime, but in this case the serial
\nabduction could be said to be organized, and thus lean more
\ntoward a felony.<\/p>\n
He said the police had been able to solve only a few common
\nkidnapping cases up to now, and in order to solve the serial
\nkidnapping, they would need assistance from the society and the
\nmedia.<\/p>\n
"Police need to be pressured to solve this case. This is no
\nordinary crime, and it needs extra attention," he said.<\/p>\n
He echoed Danardi's call for parents to be more careful in
\nwatching their children.<\/p>\n
Earlier, City Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Prasetyo told the
\nPost that the city police would lend a hand to the serial
\nkidnapping case, because it involved other provincial police
\nauthorities.<\/p>\n
He said the city police would assist detectives of other
\nsubprecincts with the appropriate technology to track down the
\nSaputra brothers.<\/p>\n
The brothers introduce themselves to victims' families as
\nDani, alias Deni Saputra, 21, and Jerry, alias Jefry Saputra, 25.
\nThe brothers are also helped by a man and a woman during the
\nkidnapping.<\/p>\n
The gang first wins the trust of the victims' families over
\ntwo or three months -- in one case, the gang had even rented a
\nhouse nearby. A gang member would then take the children for a
\nwalk, generally after politely asking their parents' permission,
\nand kidnap them.<\/p>\n
Media reports said the victims usually lived in crowded
\nresidential areas and did not come from wealthy families.<\/p>\n
Since March, the gang has reportedly kidnapped a baby girl in
\nPademangan, North Jakarta, a 4-year-old girl in Bogor and a nine-
\nyear-old girl in Cipayung, East Jakarta. Last week, they abducted
\nfour children in Cianjur, West Java.<\/p>\n
The gang is also believed to be responsible for two other
\nkidnappings in Tangerang between March and July.<\/p>\n
The brothers have raped and murdered two of their victims
\nbecause their parents could not pay the ransom.<\/p>\n
Allegedly, Jefry and Deni told the victims' parents that they
\nwere professionals and had killed a number of children prior to
\nthe recent cases.<\/p>\n
Police have yet to confirm this claim, although it has now
\nbeen four months since the brothers began their kidnapping spree.<\/p>",
