Pedicab driver gets death for massacre<\/p>\n
SURABAYA (JP): A 19-year-old pedicab driver was sentenced to
\ndeath yesterday for massacring a family of four in February.<\/p>\n
A panel of three judges found Sugianto, alias Sugik, guilty of
\nmurdering Soekardjo, his wife Hariningsih and their children Eko
\nHari Sucahyo and Danang Priyo Utomo.<\/p>\n
Presiding judge Soebijakto said in his verdict that the
\ndefendant massacred the family because he wanted their motorbike.<\/p>\n
Soebijakto said the defendant intended to sell the motorbike
\npay back his employer for his pedicab which had been stolen
\nseveral days before the murder.<\/p>\n
The judge described the premeditated murder as \"sadistic\" and
\nsaid the panel had found no consideration that could lighten the
\npunishment.<\/p>\n
\"The murder was sadistic. He beat the victims to death with a
\nstick. Some of the victims were children. It finished the family
\nlineage of Soekardjos,\" Soebijakto said.<\/p>\n
Dozens of people attending the sentencing burst into a huge
\nsatisfied applause as the judge finished reading the verdict.<\/p>\n
Sugianto, wearing a red shirt, blue jeans and a peci, or
\nnational cap, looked down but expressed no remorse when he heard
\nthe ruling. \"Shoot or hang him soon,\" someone shouted.<\/p>\n
An angry relative of the deceased slipped into a group of
\npolice officers, who were escorting the convict into a waiting
\nvan, to punch Sugianto's head.<\/p>\n
Sugianto's lawyers, from Surabaya University, said they would
\nneed time to decide if they would appeal.<\/p>\n
The murders took place on Feb. 15 at the home of Soekardjo, an
\nemployee of Airlangga University. The defendant buried the bodies
\nin their backyard.<\/p>\n
The defendant had told the court he needed Soekardjo's
\nmotorbike because his boss had demanded he pay Rp 200,000 (US$85)
\nin compensation for the pedicab he had lost. (25\/pan)<\/p>",
