Pedestrian to rule Central Jakarta<\/p>\n

Having to dodge cars, three-wheeled taxis, motorcycles and carts
\nappearing from nowhere could soon be a thing of the past for
\nCentral Jakarta residents, thanks to the municipality's plans to
\ndevelop more sidewalks on city roads next year.<\/p>\n
"This is in line with the city administration's program to
\nimprove public transportation with the ongoing development of the
\nbusway project. We want people to feel it is more convenient
\nwalking than driving in a car," Central Jakarta Mayor Muhayat
\ntold The Jakarta Post over the weekend.<\/p>\n
Muhayat said his municipality planned to construct sidewalks
\nfrom Pasar Baru to the National Monument (Monas) Park via the
\nHotel Borobudur, from Roxy in West Jakarta to Monas, from
\nKemayoran to Monas and from Pejompongan to Monas via Tanah Abang.<\/p>\n
"Hopefully, more people, including tourists, will be able to
\nenjoy these wider sidewalks," Muhayat said, adding that the Monas
\narea was chosen because it was the central city's main landmark.<\/p>\n
He did not mention the cost of the projects, saying only that
\nthey would be developed in cooperation with the city public works
\nand parks agencies.<\/p>\n
The City Parks Agency often uses the capital's few existing
\nsidewalks to plant small trees because of the limited space
\navailable for green areas in the city. These leafy obstacles mean
\npedestrians often have to walk on the road to avoid bumping into
\nthem.<\/p>\n
Jl. MH Thamrin, one of the city's prime business districts,
\nalready has new sidewalks, worth an estimated Rp 10 billion
\n(about US$998,000).<\/p>\n
The municipal administration has also recouped sidewalks on
\nJl. Salemba Raya, Jl. Kramat Raya, Jl. Gunung Sahari and Jl.
\nPaseban.<\/p>\n
Jakarta Governor Sutiyoso's administration has launched an
\narray of beautification projects across the municipality that
\nhosts foreign embassies, governmental offices and the offices of
\nmultinational companies.<\/p>\n
The city administration has also built another attraction at
\nthe Monas Park, a fountain with music and laser decorations that
\ncost Rp 26 billion.<\/p>\n
It is also constructing a fountain with a new statue of
\nnational hero Prince Diponegoro on Jl. P. Diponegoro in the plush
\nhousing area of Menteng, which is scheduled for completion by the
\nend of this year.<\/p>\n
The historical Persija soccer stadium in Menteng will also be
\nconverted into a community park equipped with cafes, restaurants
\nand car parks. That project is estimated to cost Rp 55.5 billion.<\/p>",
