Peaceful gubernatorial election may end Maluku emergency status<\/p>\n

National Police Chief Gen. Da'i Bachtiar said on Sunday the plan
\nto lift the civil emergency in Maluku depended on security during
\nand after the August gubernatorial election in the province.<\/p>\n
If the gubernatorial election runs peacefully, the planned
\nrevocation of the status could materialize, he said in the Maluku
\ncapital of Ambon.<\/p>\n
The government imposed a civil emergency in 2000 following
\nbloody ethnic clashes that have claimed thousands of lives.<\/p>\n
\"The lifting of the status is for the central government to
\ndecide. If the upcoming gubernatorial election proceeds smoothly
\nand peacefully, the provincial administration can resume
\nnormally, and local people are ready to rebuild what has been
\ndestroyed, I think the central government will take it all into
\nconsideration,\" he said.<\/p>\n
The Maluku Legislative Council is scheduled to elect a new
\ngovernor and deputy governor on Aug. 14.<\/p>\n
Da'i also ordered the recovery of around 300 rifles seized
\nfrom a warehouse of the Police Mobile Brigade (Brimob) in Ambon
\nduring a riot on June 26, 2000.<\/p>\n
\"The situation in Ambon is improving and it is therefore
\ncrucial that the stolen weapons be found,\" he said as quoted by
\nAntara.<\/p>\n
Da'i stressed that finding the weapons would be part of the
\noverall efforts to restore peace and order in the province.<\/p>\n
Maluku Police chief Brig. Gen. Bambang Sutrisno meanwhile said
\nwhile security had improved significantly, the refugees remained
\na big problem in the province.<\/p>\n
\"The biggest problem is how to return the refugees to their
\nhomes,\" said Bambang.<\/p>",
