Peace reached in Makassar<\/p>\n
MAKASSAR, South Sulawesi (JP): The tension between the
\nstudents of the state Islamic Institute (IAIN) Alaudin and
\nGovernor HZB Palaguna ended on Thursday after Palaguna apologized
\nfor the chaos triggered by civil servants during the students'
\ndemonstration against the fuel price hike.<\/p>\n
The "peace" was followed by an agreement by the governor and
\nIAIN rector Abdul Muin's to establish a joint team to control
\ncommodity prices at markets.<\/p>\n
The meeting between the students and the governor was held at
\nthe Indonesian Journalists Association (PWI) building.<\/p>\n
Palaguna said in the meeting that protesting the fuel price
\nhike was understandable. "But the problem is that the increase in
\nprice of other goods, including food items, is out of our hands.
\nThis will be burdensome to the people."<\/p>\n
Rector Muin Salim, who promised to step down if Palaguna
\nrefused to apologize to the students, said that the joint team
\nwould soon carry out surveys and operations to monitor prices of
\ngoods sold at the markets.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, student demonstrations continued peacefully in
\nMakassar on Thursday.<\/p>\n
Iswari Al Farisy, a student figure, said a dialog between the
\ncentral government and the South Sulawesi administration on the
\nfuel price hike was badly needed.<\/p>\n
"There must be a compromise in the dialog to avoid further
\nuproar," he said, explaining that the South Sulawesi people were
\nfirm in their rejection of the fuel price hike while the
\n(central) government can't go back on its decision.<\/p>\n
The students' demonstration had turned violent on Tuesday and
\nWednesday when students and civil servants clashed. (27\/sur)<\/p>",
