Peace education for Maluku victims<\/p>\n
AMBON, Maluku: Several non-governmental organizations (NGOs)
\ngrouped in the Humanitarian Association for Maluku (Humanum) have
\nlaunched a peace education program for the children of victims of
\nthe four-year religious conflict that erupted in 1999.<\/p>\n
The program aims to free the children from the trauma they
\nexperienced during the fighting, which first broke out on Jan 19,
\n1999, Humanum coordinator George Corputty said.<\/p>\n
"This peace education will hopefully encourage the children to
\ncontinue their studies and enjoy their childhood," he said.<\/p>\n
Unlike normal methods of teaching, the peace education program
\nfocuses on singing, playing and sharing the children's feeling,
\nhe said on Monday.<\/p>\n
At least 846 children, aged between 6 and 16 from nine refugee
\ncamps on Ambon island have been taking part in the program over
\nthe past few months.<\/p>\n
Corputty said the funding for the program came from the people
\nand non-governmental organizations committed to peace, including
\nforeign ones, he said.<\/p>\n
"The funding is not big as volunteers and NGO activists are
\nnot teachers but friends who are ready to play with and tell the
\nchildren stories," he said.<\/p>\n
Corputty however did not mention the size of the funding
