        "content": "<p>PDIP has commented on President Prabowo Subianto\u2019s directive to teach\nFrench in all levels of Indonesian schools. According to PDIP Central\nExecutive Board Chairman Andreas Hugo Pareira, the choice of languages\ntaught in schools should be based on national education needs and\ncurriculum studies, not on the president\u2019s visits to specific\ncountries.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf it\u2019s a matter of language preference, I think the school\ncurriculum should decide,\u201d Andreas told reporters in North Jakarta on\nSunday, 31 May 2026.<\/p>\n<p>Andreas warned against making a country\u2019s language a mandatory part\nof the national curriculum each time the government establishes ties\nwith that nation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe shouldn\u2019t automatically make a language mandatory just because we\nmeet a leader from that country,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>He acknowledged French is an important international language but\nsuggested it should be an elective subject rather than compulsory.<\/p>\n<p>The primary focus for language education, he said, should be\nstrengthening Indonesian and mastering English.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf it\u2019s made compulsory, we need English and we need to strengthen\nIndonesian. These are the most crucial for educational development,\nespecially language education,\u201d Andreas stated.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, PDIP Central Executive Board Chairman Djarot Saiful\nHidayat explained that while French is important, the policy cannot be\nimmediately made a mandatory part of Indonesia\u2019s school curriculum.<\/p>\n<p>Djarot stated that a thorough study is needed before implementing\nsuch a policy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrench is important, but we can\u2019t immediately make it compulsory\njust because the President visited France and spoke about it,\u201d Djarot\nsaid.<\/p>\n<p>Djarot also cautioned that the education curriculum should be\ncarefully planned and not dictated by the President\u2019s foreign\nvisits.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf he visits Africa next, should we teach African languages?
