PDIP supports formation of Cirebon province<\/p>\n

The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI Perjuangan),
\na major faction in the Cirebon, Majalengka and Indramayu regency
\nlegislatures, gave its full support for the proposed
\nestablishment of the new province of Cirebon, comprising several
\nregencies, citing cultural, economic and geographic reasons.<\/p>\n
Suryana, chairman of the PDI Perjuangan chapter in Cirebon,
\nsaid his party fully supported the proposed establishment of
\nCirebon province because the region that covered Karawang,
\nIndramayu, Kuningan, Ciamis and Cirebon was very different to the
\nSundanese area of West Java and possessed the economic potential
\nto improve the social welfare of the local people.<\/p>\n
\"From an economic and administrative point of view, Cirebon is
\nmore prepared than Banten, Gorontalo and Bangka-Belitung to
\nbecome an independent province,\" he told The Jakarta Post here on
\nMonday.<\/p>\n
\"Political support continues to pour in for the proposed new
\nprovince from both the executive body and the legislature in
\nCirebon, Indramayu, Majalengka and Ciamis,\" added Suryana, who is
\nalso chairman of the Cirebon regency legislative council.<\/p>\n
The proposal for the formation of the new province came from
\nthe Sultan of Cirebon, Maulana Pakuningrat, last month in
\nresponse to the increasing number of calls for West Java to
\nbecome Pasundan province.<\/p>\n
Iwan Hendrawan, chairman of Indramayu legislative council,
\nsaid authorities in Cirebon, Indramayu, Karawang, Ciamis and
\nMajalengka had held several talks to discuss preliminary
\npreparations before the proposal was lodged to the central
\ngovernment and the House of Representatives.<\/p>\n
\"We are making preliminary preparations and we want the
\nproposal to be lodged with the Ministry of Home Affairs and the
\nHouse early next year,\" he said.<\/p>\n
He said the local political elite in the regencies were
\npreparing political, cultural, economic, geographic and
\nadministrative data to support the proposal, while circulating
\nthe idea among local people.<\/p>\n
Prince Arief of the Cirebon sultanate reiterated that Cirebon
\nwas culturally and historically different to Sundanese West Java.<\/p>\n
\"The culture of Cirebon is very different to Sundanese
\nculture. It would be better for Karawang, Indramayu, Cirebon,
\nKuningan, Majalengka, Subang and Ciamis to become sole
\nprovinces,\" he said.<\/p>\n
He said that it would be better for the Sundanese people to
\nchange the name of their province from West Java to Pasundan,
\nwhich covers Bandung, Sukabumi, Sumedang, Cianjur, Garut and
\nBogor following the development of Banten Province last year.<\/p>\n
\"The transformation of West Java into three provinces will
\nbenefit the local people and their own administration because it
\nwill enable the local government to improve public services,\" he
\nsaid.<\/p>",
