        "content": "<p>PDIP supports formation of Cirebon province<\/p>\n<p>Nana Rukmana, The Jakarta Post, Cirebon, West Java<\/p>\n<p>The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI Perjuangan),<br>\na major faction in the Cirebon, Majalengka and Indramayu regency<br>\nlegislatures, gave its full support for the proposed<br>\nestablishment of the new province of Cirebon, comprising several<br>\nregencies, citing cultural, economic and geographic reasons.<\/p>\n<p>Suryana, chairman of the PDI Perjuangan chapter in Cirebon,<br>\nsaid his party fully supported the proposed establishment of<br>\nCirebon province because the region that covered Karawang,<br>\nIndramayu, Kuningan, Ciamis and Cirebon was very different to the<br>\nSundanese area of West Java and possessed the economic potential<br>\nto improve the social welfare of the local people.<\/p>\n<p>\"From an economic and administrative point of view, Cirebon is<br>\nmore prepared than Banten, Gorontalo and Bangka-Belitung to<br>\nbecome an independent province,\" he told The Jakarta Post here on<br>\nMonday.<\/p>\n<p>\"Political support continues to pour in for the proposed new<br>\nprovince from both the executive body and the legislature in<br>\nCirebon, Indramayu, Majalengka and Ciamis,\" added Suryana, who is<br>\nalso chairman of the Cirebon regency legislative council.<\/p>\n<p>The proposal for the formation of the new province came from<br>\nthe Sultan of Cirebon, Maulana Pakuningrat, last month in<br>\nresponse to the increasing number of calls for West Java to<br>\nbecome Pasundan province.<\/p>\n<p>Iwan Hendrawan, chairman of Indramayu legislative council,<br>\nsaid authorities in Cirebon, Indramayu, Karawang, Ciamis and<br>\nMajalengka had held several talks to discuss preliminary<br>\npreparations before the proposal was lodged to the central<br>\ngovernment and the House of Representatives.<\/p>\n<p>\"We are making preliminary preparations and we want the<br>\nproposal to be lodged with the Ministry of Home Affairs and the<br>\nHouse early next year,\" he said.<\/p>\n<p>He said the local political elite in the regencies were<br>\npreparing political, cultural, economic, geographic and<br>\nadministrative data to support the proposal, while circulating<br>\nthe idea among local people.<\/p>\n<p>Prince Arief of the Cirebon sultanate reiterated that Cirebon<br>\nwas culturally and historically different to Sundanese West Java.<\/p>\n<p>\"The culture of Cirebon is very different to Sundanese<br>\nculture. It would be better for Karawang, Indramayu, Cirebon,<br>\nKuningan, Majalengka, Subang and Ciamis to become sole<br>\nprovinces,\" he said.<\/p>\n<p>He said that it would be better for the Sundanese people to<br>\nchange the name of their province from West Java to Pasundan,<br>\nwhich covers Bandung, Sukabumi, Sumedang, Cianjur, Garut and<br>\nBogor following the development of Banten Province last year.<\/p>\n<p>\"The transformation of West Java into three provinces will<br>\nbenefit the local people and their own administration because it<br>\nwill enable the local government to improve public services,\" he<br>\nsaid.<\/p>",
