PDIP has reaffirmed its stance as a counterbalancing party during the\nera of President Prabowo Subianto\u2019s administration. The party adopted\nthis position out of a desire to safeguard healthy democracy in\nIndonesia whilst maintaining good relations with Prabowo.<\/p>\n
This was conveyed by PDIP Central Executive Board Chairman Ahmad\nBasarah following the conclusion of a working visit by Indonesia\u2019s fifth\nPresident and PDIP General Chairwoman Megawati Soekarnoputri to the\nUnited Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia. Megawati concluded her itinerary\nby performing the umrah pilgrimage together with her children, M\nPrananda Prabowo and Puan Maharani.<\/p>\n
In one of her prayers, Megawati asked for guidance and strength in\nleading the party. According to Basarah, PDIP\u2019s current position is not\nan easy one.<\/p>\n
\u201cOn the one hand, Ibu Mega has drawn a political line to become a\npolitical party outside government, serving as a democratic\ncounterbalance to the President\u2019s administration, the administration led\nby President Prabowo. But on the other hand, Bu Mega also wishes to\nmaintain her commitment to friendship, her humanitarian commitment to\nPak Prabowo,\u201d Basarah said in Saudi Arabia on Sunday (15\/2\/2026).<\/p>\n
Basarah then quoted Megawati\u2019s remarks about her friendship with\nPrabowo. According to Basarah, Megawati does not want her relationship\nwith Prabowo to deteriorate because of politics.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat Ibu Mega said was, \u2018He has been my friend since long ago, and\nwe do not want our relationship to be damaged merely because of\npolitics.\u2019 Therefore, between humanitarian relations and political\nrelations, Bu Mega is striving to find points of equilibrium,\u201d he\nadded.<\/p>\n
For this reason, Basarah continued, Megawati has chosen to carry out\nparty activities that have a direct impact on the public. According to\nBasarah, many PDIP officials have stepped in to assist communities\naffected by disasters.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo Bu Mega is lowering the political temperature of PDI Perjuangan\u2019s\nactivities, directly addressing the issues and problems faced by the\npublic,\u201d Basarah said.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd I believe that PDI Perjuangan\u2019s humanitarian activities of this\nnature indirectly assist Prabowo\u2019s administration in fulfilling the\ngovernment\u2019s duties and responsibilities to be present amongst\ncommunities experiencing disasters,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
This approach, Basarah said, represents one of Megawati\u2019s efforts to\nmaintain her party\u2019s point of equilibrium. Megawati is striving to\npreserve a healthy democratic system whilst nurturing good relations\nwith Prabowo.<\/p>\n
\u201cI believe this is the form of balance currently being adopted by Ibu\nMegawati Soekarnoputri in positioning PDI Perjuangan as a\ncounterbalancing party so that our democracy runs healthily.
