JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Secretary-General of PDI-P Hasto Kristiyanto\nhas stated that Indonesia has become a populist authoritarian state\nsince President Joko Widodo\u2019s second term.<\/p>\n
According to Hasto, this shift is marked by Indonesia\u2019s democratic\npractices moving away from political and economic democracy rooted in\nPancasila values.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe deeply regret that the political and economic democracy, which\nforms the core of Indonesia\u2019s democracy, has now transformed into a\ncentralised system,\u201d Hasto said during a speech at the PDI-P Party\nSchool in Jakarta on Monday, 1 June 2026, leading the Pancasila Birthday\ncommemoration ceremony.<\/p>\n
At the same event, Hasto criticised the legal system\u2019s increasing\nsubordination to power, stating that justice-focused law has lost its\nindependence.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe legal system, which should prioritise justice, has been altered\nto serve power,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cLaw enforcement officials and the entire state apparatus have been\nreduced to tools for electoral mobilisation and protectors of the power\nelite. This was evident in the 2024 general election,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
Hasto said PDI-P previously issued an apology to the public during\nthe party\u2019s National Working Meeting (Rakernas).<\/p>\n
\u201cDuring the Rakernas, PDI-P apologised to all Indonesians for the\ntransformation of power\u2019s character due to ambition,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Hasto also highlighted cases of political and legal criminalisation,\nstressing the importance of the rule of law as the foundation of state\nlife.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen cases of political and legal criminalisation occur, they\nprovoke strong criticism that without the rule of law, there can be no\nstable political structure or a thriving economic system for\nprosperity,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cA just legal system is fundamental. Without it, there is no respect\nfor humanity, people\u2019s welfare, and justice. Without a just legal\nsystem, everything becomes costly and uncertain,\u201d Hasto concluded.<\/p>\n
During his second term in 2021, Jokowi addressed accusations of\nauthoritarianism.<\/p>\n
At that time, the University of Indonesia\u2019s Student Executive Board\n(BEM UI) labelled Jokowi \u201cThe King of Lip Service\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt has been like this for a long time. Some used to say I was\nklemar-klemer, others called me plonga-plongo, then later some said I\nwas authoritarian,\u201d he said during a press briefing via the Presidential\nSecretariat\u2019s YouTube channel on Tuesday, 29 June 2021.<\/p>\n
He added that criticism is permissible in a democracy.<\/p>\n
