        "content": "<p>Jakarta \u2013 A member of Commission III of the Indonesian House of\nRepresentatives from the PDIP faction, Mercy Barends, has raised\nconcerns about the presence of hundreds of unreclaimed mining pits in\nSouth Kalimantan province.<\/p>\n<p>Based on data released by the Indonesian Environmental Forum (WALHI),\nthere are more than 800 mining pits that remain unclosed and have\nresulted in fatalities among the public.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUntil 2026, approximately 20 deaths have been recorded, both\nchildren and adults, as a result of abandoned mining pits,\u201d she stated\nin a written statement on Tuesday, 10 March 2026.<\/p>\n<p>According to her, this situation demonstrates weak oversight and\npost-mining management, necessitating serious measures, including the\ndevelopment of a clear road map for closing mining pits and organising\nmining areas to prevent harm to the safety of surrounding\ncommunities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlthough there has been information that warning signs have been\ninstalled, installation of signs alone is insufficient because the area\nitself must be clarified with proper buffer zones. These specific points\nmust be properly designated so that people do not freely enter and exit\nmining environments,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd I believe this is what we must emphasise \u2013 mining operations may\nproceed, but only mining that complies with regulations, and all parties\ninvolved must be firmly held accountable, whether corporate entities,\u201d\nshe continued.<\/p>\n<p>She also emphasised the involvement of officials who have backed\nillegal mining operations and failed to implement post-mining management\nmeasures.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOfficials who have assisted illegal mining and other such\nactivities. I believe post-mining management must be conducted in\naccordance with the principles of sustainable mining so that\nenvironmental impacts and public safety risks can be minimised,\u201d she\nsaid.<\/p>",
