PDI proposes four governor candidate<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The list of candidates for Jakarta's next
\ngovernor increased as the Indonesian Democratic Party (PDI)
\nproposed four candidates, including Jakarta Military Commander
\nMaj. Gen. Sutiyoso.<\/p>\n
Chairman of PDI at the City Council, Lukman F. Mokoginta, said
\nPDI proposed four candidates for the city's next governor.
\nBesides Sutiyoso, their main candidate was Governor Surjadi
\nSoedirdja, former chief of Jakarta military command Lt. Gen. A.M.
\nHendropriyono and also City Council Speaker Maj. Gen. M.H.
\nRitonga.<\/p>\n
Ritonga was also a former chief of City Police.<\/p>\n
He said PDI had officially proposed the list of candidates to
\nRitonga Monday.<\/p>\n
\"We proposed four candidates after carefully evaluating
\nprospective candidates,\" Lukman said.<\/p>\n
The proposal, he said, was a response to the council's call on
\nfactions and the public to propose candidates for the next
\ngovernor by the June 20 deadline.<\/p>\n
Earlier the United Development Party (PPP) had proposed
\nSurjadi and Hendropriyono as candidates, while the Armed Forces
\n(ABRI) proposed for Surjadi's reelection.<\/p>\n
Golkar has not yet named its candidates.<\/p>\n
Maluku people<\/p>\n
Yesterday, the Association of Maluku People proposed for
\nSurjadi's reelection through the council's ABRI faction.<\/p>\n
The proposal was signed by the association's chairs, Yenny A.
\nTiakoly and A. Kadir Assagaf, and its deputy secretary-general
\nPeter Matahelumual.<\/p>\n
The association proposed for Surjadi's reelection because of
\nhis success in city development. \"His policies have been
\nable...to accommodate and integrate all Jakartans' interests,
\nincluding Maluku people in Jakarta,\" the proposal said.<\/p>\n
Previously the chairman of the National Youth Committee (KNPI)
\ncity-branch, Adhyaksa, was quoted by the Media Indonesia daily as
\nsaying that the committee supported Hendro and Sutiyoso as
\ncandidates for the next governor.<\/p>\n
Surjadi, a former Jakarta military commander, had filed a
\nletter of resignation to President Soeharto through Minister of
\nHome Affairs Moch. Yogie S.M. in March. His office term ends Oct.
\n6.<\/p>\n
A 1974 government regulation stipulates that a governor may
\nserve a second five-year term.<\/p>\n
Proposed candidates, which must be a minimum of three and a
\nmaximum of five people, should meet all requirements set by the
\nMinistry of Home Affairs before being officially nominated.<\/p>\n
The council will consult the Minister of Home Affairs on the
\nlist of candidates before handing it to the President for
