PDI-P the most corrupt, Kwik says<\/p>\n

The ruling Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI
\nPerjuangan) is the most corrupt party in Indonesia and will
\ncrumble during the next elections, PDI-Perjuangan's very own
\nState Minister of National Development Planning Kwik Kian Gie
\nsaid Monday.<\/p>\n
\"The largest corruption is committed by my party. PDI
\nPerjuangan is on brink of disarray. It will break down in the
\nnext election,\" he told participants of a national meeting on
\nadministrative reform in his capacity as minister.<\/p>\n
The meeting was opened by President Megawati Soekarnoputri,
\nwho chairs PDI Perjuangan, at the State Palace earlier Monday.
\nThe President was not present during Kwik's speech at the Sahid
\nJaya hotel on Jl. Sudirman.<\/p>\n
PDI Perjuangan is one of many parties founded in the wake of
\nreform movement that deposed the corrupt-ridden, 32-year regime
\nof Soeharto in May 1998.<\/p>\n
Kwik, however, failed to provide evidence or reasons for his
\ncontroversial statement, but focused on a complaint from the head
\nof West Java's settlement and regional infrastructure office.<\/p>\n
The minister said the official had complained about a number
\nof PDI Perjuangan supporters who came to his office to demand
\nprojects.<\/p>\n
\"We are more afraid of PDI Perjuangan members than Police
\nMobile Brigade officers because party supporters threatened to
\nmobilize the masses if their requests were turned down. The fear
\nis that as PDI Perjuangan dominates the provincial legislative
\ncouncil, they can fire us,\" Kwik quoted the official as saying.<\/p>\n
Kwik, who heads PDI Perjuangan's research and development
\ndivision, said he possessed concrete data about corruption
\ncommitted by his party, but the data could not be easily used as
\nevidence.<\/p>\n
\"We have concrete data about the corruption but we lack
\ndocuments to bring the persons involved to justice,\" he said.<\/p>\n
To save the party, he said, he had formed a team of 20 party
\nactivists who were committed to the party.<\/p>\n
\"The team will continue attracting more members who share the
\nsame concerns,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Kwik often has a different voice to that of the Cabinet,
\nincluding on the issues of privatization, the role of the
\nInternational Monetary Fund in Indonesia and foreign loans.<\/p>\n
He recently said the nation had wasted Rp 444 trillion (US$49
\nbillion) of its assets, partly due to corrupt state funds.<\/p>",
