PDI-P revives community posts<\/p>\n
BANDUNG (JP): The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI
\nPerjuangan) has asked its supporters across the country to revive
\ncommunity posts in the lead-up to the special session of the
\nPeople's Consultative Assembly (MPR) in August.<\/p>\n
PDI Perjuangan deputy chairman Roy B. Janis said here on
\nSunday the order was aimed at enhancing communication between
\nparty supporters.<\/p>\n
\"We have asked PDI Perjuangan supporters to activate the posts
\nmainly for the purpose of internal communication, which we
\nbelieve will yield a lot of benefits,\" Roy said.<\/p>\n
Husband of PDI Perjuangan chairwoman Megawati Soekarnouputri,
\nTaufik Kiemas, led a ceremony to mark the re-establishment of
\n1,000 community posts across West Java.<\/p>\n
Roy said the number of the posts nationwide could reach tens
\nof thousands.<\/p>\n
The government ordered the closure of the posts prior to the
\n1999 general election for security reasons. Megawati said last
\nmonth the posts would serve as places where party supporters
\ncould launch relief operations to help victims of disaster or
\nrioting.<\/p>\n
\"Now that the MPR special session is drawing near, the posts
\nshould operate again, to maintain people's security,\" Roy said,
\nwithout elaborating.<\/p>\n
Many believe the session, which may serve as an impeachment
\nhearing for President Abdurrahman Wahid, is liable to incite
\nrioting, particularly in Abdurrahman's home base of East Java.
