JAKARTA: Legislator Roy B.B. Janis was elected chairman of the
\nIndonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) faction in the
\nHouse of Representatives on Friday, replacing Arifin Panigoro.<\/p>\n
Janis's election ended the long-delayed leadership reshuffle
\nwithin the faction, which is a major contributor to the internal
\nbickering that the nation's largest political party is well known
\nfor.<\/p>\n
Panigoro, an oil tycoon, enjoys the support of party chair
\nMegawati Soekarnoputri. His political opponents demanded his
\nresignation after the Attorney General's Office declared him a
\nsuspect in a corruption case.<\/p>\n
Roy was elected at a faction plenary meeting attended by only
\n87 of the party's 149 representatives in the House after Panigoro
\nrefused renomination.<\/p>\n
Initially, the meeting's agenda was to discuss internal
\nmatters before the House goes into recess next week. Several
\nlegislators managed to force their demand that they vote for a
\nnew chairman.<\/p>\n
Under the party's internal rules, the faction chairman will
\nbecome a deputy chairman on the party's board of executives.<\/p>\n
Roy will be inaugurated by Megawati after she returns from the
\nAsia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Shanghai. -- Antara<\/p>",
