PDI-P faces lawsuit after assault on reporter<\/p>\n
BANDUNG (JP): Pikiran Rakyat daily plans to file a lawsuit
\nagainst the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI
\nPerjuangan) in Purwakarta on Monday after an internal dispute
\nbetween party members led to an assault on a reporter.<\/p>\n
Chief editor H. AM. Ruslan said in Bandung on Tuesday that his
\noffice would sue the party's security guards for the arrest and
\nbeating of Nuryaman, the reporter assigned to cover the dispute.<\/p>\n
The daily also demanded the party's West Java chapter
\napologize for the incident and discipline its security guards in
\nPurwakarta.<\/p>\n
\"We condemn the anarchy. Our reporter revealed his
\nidentification but still the party's security guards assaulted
\nand detained him for about one hour,\" an enraged Ruslan said.<\/p>\n
He said the matter would only be closed after the party's West
\nJava chapter apologized and the case was settled in court.<\/p>\n
Purwakarta Police acknowledged the report made by Nuryaman. A
\ndoctor said the reporter suffered injuries consistent with a
\nbeating, including a bloody nose and badly bruised face.<\/p>\n
West Java Police chief Maj. Gen. Adang Darajatun said that
\neven without a formal report from Nuryaman, the police would take
\nlegal steps against the attackers. \"The action is a crime.\"<\/p>\n
The secretary of the party's West Java chapter, Iwan Rosadi,
\nsaid the party took full responsibility for the attack. \"We will
\napproach Pikiran Rakyat to deal with this.\"<\/p>\n
Explanations from the party's security guards in Purwakarta
\nare also needed, he added.<\/p>\n
Two rival groups claiming to be security guards (satgas) of
\nthe party were involved in a fierce clash before the assault on
\nthe reporter.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile in Surabaya, East Java, a dispute between 25
\nreporters and local legislators from the PDI Perjuangan faction
\ncontinued on Tuesday with fresh accusations against reporters as
\ntroublemakers and scandalmongers.<\/p>\n
Provincial legislative council speaker M. Basuki, who is an
\nofficial of the party's Surabaya branch, cut short an interview
\nbetween five reporters and the chairman of Commission B of the
\nlegislative council, saying, \"You reporters are all
\nprovocateurs\".<\/p>\n
Basuki walked out when reporters asked him to clarify the
\nstatement.<\/p>\n
Reporters have vowed to boycott all activities of the party's
\nlegislators.<\/p>\n
The dispute started last week when the legislative council
\nannounced its plan to curb media access to legislators.<\/p>\n
Reporters said on Monday they would file suit against
\nlegislator Adrianus Harsono of the party. He reportedly accused
\nthe reporters of unethical cooperation with provincial
\nadministration officials to discredit the legislators.
