PDI-P congress in stalemate<\/p>\n
PURWOKERTO, Central Java: A branch congress of the Indonesian
\nDemocratic Party of Struggle (PDI Perjuangan) ended in stalemate
\nhere on Tuesday after dozens of civilian guards disrupted the
\nmeeting to protest against the possible election of a rank
\noutsider as chairman.<\/p>\n
Tension had surfaced after little known Bejo Subaryadi headed
\nthe count by 37 votes after a rerun of the vote for the
\nchairmanship. Bejo failed to secure the top post, but the outcome
\nwas enough to raise many eyebrows because he finished empty
\nhanded in the initial vote, which had to be repeated after none
\nof the eight candidates reached the necessary quota of two-thirds
\nof the votes cast.<\/p>\n
\"It (the result) is questionable. Money politics must have
\nmarred this election,\" one of the guards shouted.<\/p>\n
The rerun only finished in the wee hours on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
Fearing an incident following his surprising performance, Bejo
\nrose to the podium to announce that he was withdrawing from the
\nrace.<\/p>\n
\"For the sake of our unity, I'm not running for the chief
\npost,\" Bejo said, amid jeers from his supporters who insisted
\nthat he go ahead.<\/p>\n
Tasroni Budi Prayitno, an executive of the party's provincial
\nchapter who supervised the election, decided to close the
\ncongress and said he would let the party's central board settle
