PDI defeat is laughing stock<\/p>\n
SEMARANG: About 60 supporters of Megawati Soekarnoputri
\ncelebrated Thursday the humiliating election defeat of the
\nIndonesian Democratic Party (PDI) under the government-backed
\nleadership of Soerjadi.<\/p>\n
Megawati, elected PDI chief in 1993 and overthrown by Soerjadi
\nin a breakaway congress last year, was barred from running in the
\nMay 29 election.<\/p>\n
Her supporters flocked to the Batang regency PDI office to
\nlaugh at Soerjadi's poor performance which gave the party only 11
\nof the 425 contested House of Representatives seats.<\/p>\n
They laughed even louder when their cheer leader said the PDI
\nhad "suddenly got an additional seat from nowhere" for the North
\nSumatra constituency.<\/p>\n
They said the "North Sumatra windfall" was a mere trick by an
\noutside force to help Soerjadi's deputy Fatimah Achmad get a seat
\nin the House.<\/p>\n
They dispersed without incident, but promised to return with
\nmore Megawati supporters to laugh louder. They called on fellow
