PDAM Jaya dismisses 12 protesting workers<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The city-owned tap water firm PDAM Jaya has
\ndismissed 12 of its \"outspoken\" employees starting from Monday
\nfor allegedly damaging the company's image by conducting a series
\nof protests over the last six months.<\/p>\n
The firm's president Muzahiem Mochtar told a press conference
\nthat the employees' final intolerable action took place last
\nmonth, when the 12 men, together with some of their other fellow
\nworkers, occupied the firm's logistic office in Pejompongan,
\nCentral Jakarta.<\/p>\n
\"That was their most serious offense. It disturbed our service
\nto the public,\" Muzahiem said.<\/p>\n
\"The dismissal is effective from today (Monday). They have
\nbeen honorably dismissed without their consent,\" he added.<\/p>\n
Muzahiem explained that the decision was also supported by
\nGovernor Sutiyoso, who gave his recommendation in a letter dated
\nOct. 7.<\/p>\n
He said Sutiyoso urged the firm to take stern action,
\nincluding dismissal, against the workers who were allegedly
\nresponsible for the occupation of the logistic office.<\/p>\n
The positions of the dismissed workers range from ordinary
\nstaff to divisional heads, he said.<\/p>\n
According to Muzahiem, the 12 workers would receive
\ncompensation for their dismissal worth nine times their monthly
\nbasic salary, which ranges between Rp 1.7 million (US$223.70) and
\nRp 2.5 million each.<\/p>\n
He insisted that PDAM Jaya were ready to face a possible
\nlawsuit from the workers.<\/p>\n
Among the firm's 68 employees, the 12 dismissed workers were
\nconsidered the ones most responsible for the \"occupation' of the
\nlogistic office, he said.<\/p>\n
The remaining 46 workers, including the union's chairman Amir
\nTanjung, who is also chairman of the North Jakarta branch of the
\nJustice and Unity Party (PKP), would not be dismissed as long as
\nthey don't take part in any protests against the company again,
\nMuzahiem said.<\/p>\n
He denied the charge that the 12 workers were dismissed
\nbecause they were members of the firm's PAM Jaya workers union.<\/p>\n
The dismissed workers included executives of the union: deputy
\nchairman Yorizon B., secretary Zaenal Abidin and spokesman Yoshi
\nAndriawan.<\/p>\n
According to Yorizon, who had worked at the firm for 24 years,
\nthe dismissal was unfair, and that he and his 11 friends would
\nsoon file a lawsuit against the firm.<\/p>\n
The dismissed workers were known as leaders of the workers
\nunion which has repeatedly protested against the managements
\nagreement between PDAM Jaya and its two foreign partners, PT Pam
\nLyonnaise Jaya (Palyja) and Tames Pam Jaya (TPJ).<\/p>\n
According to Muzahiem, the workers' action has damaged the
\ncountry's image since it is related to foreign firms.<\/p>\n
\"The cancellation of the agreement is not as easy as they
