PBSI tells chapters to reactivate tournaments<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Badminton Association of Indonesia (PBSI) is
\nurging its provincial chapters, especially outside Java, to
\nreactivate local tournaments to provide players from local clubs
\nwith more experience.<\/p>\n
\"Badminton clubs are the grassroots in the sport's
\ndevelopment. Therefore, we must empower them by staging more
\ncompetitions, and help improve their financial circumstances,\"
\nPBSI secretary general Leo Chandra Wiranata told reporters on
\nTuesday.<\/p>\n
\"The clubs can, for example, award a bigger share of the prize
\nmoney earned by their players abroad. We can lower the share for
\nthe PBSI and its chapters.\"<\/p>\n
Leo was responding to requests made by officials and coaches
\nfrom non-Javan chapters during the Interclub National Badminton
\nChampionships in Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan last week that the
\nPBSI should organize more tournaments outside Java.<\/p>\n
Many of them blamed the PBSI's centralized development program
\nfor denying the chance to non-Java-based shuttlers of reaching a
\nhigher level of achievement.<\/p>\n
\"Most shuttlers are concentrated in Java and there are always
\nseveral events held each year in Java. In Central Java alone,
\nthere are events in Pekalongan, Purwokerto, Semarang, Surakarta
\nand Tegal,\" Leo said.<\/p>\n
\"Shuttlers from other chapters can easily reach the
\ncompetition venues due to ease of transportation.\"<\/p>\n
\"In the 1980s, Java used to organize some 26 to 30 events each
\nyear to give the players more experience.\"<\/p>\n
Financial ability was also pointed to as one of the reasons
\nfor the lack of tournaments outside of Java.<\/p>\n
\"Not all chapters outside of Java have the financial
\nwherewithal to stage their own tournaments, not to mention
\nnational events,\" Leo said.<\/p>\n
\"Organizing a local event needs a lot of money. The cost will
\nincrease if there are participants from other provinces.\"<\/p>\n
Leo expected the implementation of regional autonomy to bring
\nbetter times financially to the PBSI's chapters with them gaining
\na greater say over their own affairs.<\/p>\n
\"The wealthy regions can hire better coaches and provide
\nbetter facilities for their shuttlers. They can even send their
\nshuttlers abroad,\" he said.<\/p>\n
\"But this could also cause jealousy, especially among the not-
\nso-wealthy regions with less resources.\"<\/p>\n
By having more tournaments, national shuttlers -- those being
\ngroomed in the Indonesian Badminton Center (PBI) in Cipayung,
\nEast Jakarta -- will be expected to defend their clubs in
\nnational championships.<\/p>\n
But Leo said it would be impossible to dissolve the center as
\nit was used to groom shuttlers for major international events.<\/p>\n
\"The PBSI has the responsibility to produce world-class
\nplayers who can reach the top. We are under constant pressure to
\nbe the best.\"<\/p>\n
\"That's why we have to keep the center open all year round to
\nprepare our national squad. Without consistent preparation, other
\ncountries will easily see off our shuttlers.\"<\/p>\n
\"Other nations, such as China, Malaysia and South Korea have
\neven copied our system and turned out to be our most difficult
\nopponents,\" Leo continued. (nvn)<\/p>",
