PBSI revises shuttler selection system<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Badminton Association of Indonesia (PBSI)
\nhas given in to its shuttlers' offer and has approved a revision
\nin the promotion and expulsion selection system.<\/p>\n
PBSI training director Christian Hadinata told reporters on
\nTuesday that the body agreed to revise and reschedule the
\nselection after an hour discussion with the second string
\nshuttlers early in the morning.<\/p>\n
\"We finally decided not to hold the match combining the team
\nof 19 members who have been here for less than a year with the
\nother group of 19 older shuttlers. It's unfair for the newcomers.
\nThey wouldn't be able to defeat their seniors.\"<\/p>\n
\"Another reason is the shuttlers think we don't give them
\nenough time to prepare for the selection. Well, a shuttler must
\nbe always prepared for any occasion because that's his or her
\njob. However, we can compromise with them on the matter.\"<\/p>\n
Christian acknowledged that the decision to stage the
\nselection was made when he was assigned as the team manager in
\nthe Japan Open from April 5 to April 9.<\/p>\n
One of the boycotting shuttlers, Ade Lukas, a men's doubles
\nspecialist, confirmed both factors were the main reason behind
\nsnubbing the selection process which was scheduled from Monday to
\nThursday.<\/p>\n
\"We boycotted it because we received an unclear explanation on
\nthe purpose and the system of the selection. After getting
\nbriefed on it this morning, we understand the whole problem and
\nwe accept it.\"<\/p>\n
\"We agree to the promotion and expulsion selection to recruit
\nyounger athletes. But we want PBSI to set a fixed annual program.
\nThe selection was very sudden for us because we only knew about
\nit two weeks ago.\"<\/p>\n
\"We also questioned their policy to recruit winners of the
\ncircuits whose ages are similar to ours. It's nonsense to replace
\nus with older players, too. But they said they would only recruit
\nyounger shuttlers.\"<\/p>\n
\"We thought it was unfair for the 19-member team to join the
\nselection because it would be their third time. Now we understand
\nthat it was only to decide the ranking among them.\"<\/p>\n
Ade acknowledged that the shuttlers made a mistake by
\nboycotting the event.<\/p>\n
\"We admit that we were wrong. We will discuss tonight about
\ndeciding on a date for the selection and will submit an answer to
\nPBSI tomorrow.\"<\/p>\n
Twenty-eight young shuttlers protested the selection by
\nboycotting it and opted to leave their dormitory on Monday.<\/p>\n
PBSI chairman Subagyo Hadisiswoyo denied the incident was a
\nboycott and said it was only a misunderstanding.<\/p>\n
Christian said PBSI allowed the shuttlers to decide the time
\nfor it.<\/p>\n
\"We gave them an ultimatum to stage the selection no later
\nthan April 30, because PBSI will have to concentrate on the
\nThomas and Uber Cups championships in Kuala Lumpur in May.\"<\/p>\n
Christian also said the selection had to be staged due to
\nunprepared facilities and budget from four PBSI chapters --
\nJakarta, West Java, Central Java and East Java -- to stage the
\ndecentralized training program.<\/p>\n
\"The decentralized training program was approved by members of
\nthe PBSI annual meeting in Semarang last year. Unfortunately, we
\nhaven't been able to stage it yet.\"<\/p>\n
Christian said PBSI must reconsider a \"back to basic\" program
\nwhich would let athletes practice in their respective clubs
\nduring their off-season.<\/p>\n
\"PBSI will only call them for big tournaments. The system will
\nencourage clubs to have tighter competition among them and enable
\nthem to supply more juniors for the national team.\" (yan)<\/p>",
