PBSI needs new approach: Official<\/p>\n

The Badminton Association of Indonesia (PBSI) is in desperate
\nneed of a more business-like approach when facing future
\nchallenges, a candidate for the organization's top position,
\nJustian Hadinata, said on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
"Such an approach is vital for maintaining the country's
\nbadminton supremacy at both the regional and international
\nlevels," warned Justian, who is currently vice president of the
\nInternational Badminton Federation (IBF).<\/p>\n
"We should have adopted the approach a long time ago. All
\norganizations dealing with marketable sports have utilized the
\nmethod earlier.<\/p>\n
"A business-like approach means everybody obtains and carries
\nout their jobs in line with their competence. We will be left
\nbehind if we fail to adopt such an approach," he added.<\/p>\n
PBSI's Jakarta chapter officially nominated Justian on Sunday,
\nto replace Subagyo Hadisiswoyo. The election will take place
\nduring a PBSI congress to be held here from Nov. 2 until Nov. 4.<\/p>\n
Justian, however, admitted that in some cases such a cultural
\nchange would take time and meet opposition.<\/p>\n
"It will not take too long if I ask for reports to be
\nsubmitted at a set time, let's say on the tenth of each month,"
\nhe said.<\/p>\n
"But there will be resistance in changing the entire culture,
\nparticularly because most of our officials are volunteers."<\/p>\n
To ensure implementation of the business culture, Justian
\nwould hire full time professionals to run PBSI's day-to-day
\nactivities, especially those related to fundraising and athlete
\ndevelopment.<\/p>\n
"PBSI needs professionals who can, for example, sell its world
\nclass achievements to potential sponsors. We can use the money to
\ndevelop more young talents from all over the country," he said.<\/p>\n
"We also need people who can schedule training programs to
\nassist our coaches, as most of our coaches lack planning
\nabilities."<\/p>\n
In a separate development, shuttler Yuli Marfuah decided to
\nresign from the Indonesian Badminton Center (PBI), saying she
\nplanned on pursuing her academic career.<\/p>\n
"It has been a long-time dream that I would someday continue
\nmy education. I am planning to take communication studies," she
\ntold The Jakarta Post by phone.<\/p>\n
"I want to be a public relations officer because I love
\nworking and seeing a lot of people. I am also looking forward to
\nseeking a career in the entertainment field," she added.<\/p>\n
Despite the fact that Yuli has not yet produced any major
\nachievements, her resignation still leaves the Indonesian women's
\ndivision with a hole, as there are no reliable replacements
\navailable.<\/p>\n
Yuli's resignation comes less than two weeks after men's
\ndoubles shuttler Tony Gunawan announced his resignation, who also
\nplans on continuing his education.<\/p>\n
Justian, who also chairs Tangkas Bogasari badminton club, has
\na different idea about handling players who resign, saying PBSI
\ncould still utilize their services.<\/p>\n
"Let them resign from the center and continue their education
\nabroad, but they should continue their training and be ready to
\nrepresent Indonesia when they are needed," he said.<\/p>",
