PBB hopes to finish among top three<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: The Crescent Star Party (PBB) has set its aims on
\nfinishing among the top three in the 2004 legislative election,
\nits chairman said.<\/p>\n
PBB chairman Yusril Ihza Mahendra expressed on Monday his
\noptimism that his party would meet its target, considering its
\npreparations, which he said were \"much better\" than in 1999.<\/p>\n
The Muslim party, a proponent of implementing sharia, or
\nIslamic Law, in Indonesia, won 14 seats at the House of
\nRepresentatives to finish sixth in the last election, placing it
\namong parties that beat the 2 percent electoral threshold.<\/p>\n
Yusril was speaking at the opening of the party's national
\nworking congress at a haj dormitory in Bekasi, West Java.<\/p>\n
The congress is to discuss, among other issues, the party's
\nstrategy to improve its standing in the 2004 polls and to
\nevaluate its performance in the past year.<\/p>\n
Around 500 party executives representing the central board and
\nregional chapters are attending the congress, which will run
\nthrough Wednesday.<\/p>\n
Coordinating Minister for People's Welfare Jusuf Kalla and
\nNahdlatul Ulama chairman Hasyim Muzadi are expected to address
\nthe participants on the final day of the congress on their vision

MANADO, North Sulawesi: Over 1,500 military cadets and
\nstudents, including those from the Jatinangor, West Java-based
\nPublic Administration Institute (STPDN), are gathering in an
\njoint training program here.<\/p>\n
Indonesian Military (TNI) chief of general affairs Lt. Gen.
\nDjamari Chaniago said the unprecedented joint training was
\nexpected to help future military and civilian leaders reach
\ncommon understanding and cooperation in tackling various national
\nissues.<\/p>\n
Participants of the training program come from the Army, Navy,
\nAir Force, National Police, military academy and STPDN.<\/p>\n
Previously, the training involved only military and police
\ncadets.<\/p>\n
Djamari called on participants to share their experiences and
\nideas on how to promote nationalism, a culture of cooperation and
\npluralism.<\/p>\n
North Sulawesi governor AJ Sondakh, Wirabuana Military
\nCommander overseeing Sulawesi Maj. Gen Suprapto and North

JAKARTA: The government is setting up a national commission on
\nbirth control in a move to reduce the number of abortion cases
\nand maternal mortality rates in the country, which remain high
\namong Southeast Asian countries.<\/p>\n
Minister of Health Achmad Suyudi said at a workshop on
\nreproductive health here on Monday that the commission was needed
\nto coordinate policy-making and measures to curb the abortion
\nrate. The commission will fall under the responsibility of the
\nCoordinating Minister for People's Welfare Jusuf Kalla.<\/p>\n
The commission will focus on young women in order to provide
\nthem with knowledge on reproductive health. Achmad said the pilot
\nprogram was expected to protect youths from abortion, early
\nmarriage, sexually transmitted diseases and HIV\/AIDS.<\/p>\n
Achmad said that in the long run, the commission would also
\ndraft policies for the national family planning program, which is
\nbeing run by the National Family Planning Board (BKKBN).<\/p>\n
Abortion cases now reach 2 million annually, while the
\nmaternal mortality rate stands at 390 per 100,000 births.
\nMalnutrition as a result of poverty has been blamed for the

JAKARTA: The Directorate General of Intellectual and Property
\nRights (HAKI) destroyed on Monday 19,000 pirated VCDs, CDs and
\nDVDs at its office on Jl. Daan Mogot, Tangerang in Banten as part
\nof the implementation of the new law on intellectual property
\nrights.<\/p>\n
The HAKI director general, Abdul Bari Azed, said that the
\npirated goods had been confiscated during raids in Menteng DVD in
\nCentral Jakarta and Ratu Plaza and ITC Fatmawati, both in South
\nJakarta.<\/p>\n
Bari said that there were currently 50 factories with 200
\nmachines illegally producing four million copies of pirate VCDs,
\nCDs and DVDs per day within Indonesia.<\/p>\n
He said pirated VCDs, CDs and DVDs of films and music alone
\ncaused US$250 million in state losses per year.<\/p>\n
\"We will continue the raids and target businessmen who posses
\nadvanced technology in producing pirated VCDs, CDs and DVDs since
\nPresident Megawati Soekarnoputri has given 1,000 percent support
\nto us,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile HAKI director Emawati Junus said she had sent
\nwarning letters to shopping malls and plazas in Tangerang and
\nBogor asking them not to sell illegal VCDs, CDs and DVDs. -- JP<\/p>",
