Paying a call on Soeharto<\/p>\n

Probsutedjo, half brother of former president Soeharto, has
\ndeclared Soeharto is making a special effort to become a
\n\"pundit\". These are modern times, so anyone wishing to be a
\n\"saintly\" man must be declared. In Javanese culture it is common
\nfor a person to retire into an ascetic life style when
\napproaching the end of his days, setting a good example for his
\ndisciples.<\/p>\n
Many social figures, with different motives, of course, have
\ndared to pay a courtesy call on Soeharto. Abdurrahman Wahid,
\nbetter known as Gus Dur, visited Soeharto. But Amien Rais,
\nchairman of the National Mandate Party, has no intention of
\nseeing Soeharto until the latter repents and returns his
\nallegedly ill-gotten wealth.<\/p>\n
Nurcholis Madjid, another noted figure, has a different story
\nto tell. When he was summoned by Soeharto, he boldly replied:
\n\"Sorry, I don't want to come for the time being.\"<\/p>\n
Why should Soeharto indulge himself in summoning people? He
\nshould instead become a good pundit, and not emulate Durno, the
\nfraudulent pundit from the puppet tale.<\/p>\n
