The Patriot Expedition Team (TEP) from IPB University, together with\nthe Simeulue Regency Government, is studying the development of\nfreshwater aquaculture and mariculture in the transmigration area of\nSimeulue Island, Aceh Province.<\/p>\n
TEP leader Irzal Efendi said in Simeulue on Sunday that freshwater\nfish farming is important for strengthening the availability of protein\nsources for the people of Simeulue Island.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs an archipelagic region, fish supplies on Simeulue Island can face\nobstacles at certain times, especially during extreme weather in the\nwest monsoon and transitional seasons. Freshwater fish farming is\nimportant for strengthening the availability of protein sources for the\npeople of Simeulue Island,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
TEP is a programme of the Ministry of Transmigration that sends\ngraduates, master\u2019s degree holders, doctoral degree holders, and young\nprofessors from various universities to transmigration areas to conduct\nresearch, provide assistance, and take concrete action to encourage the\neconomic growth of transmigrants.<\/p>\n
He said the freshwater aquaculture and mariculture programme is\nexpected not merely to become a pilot project, but to serve as a step\ntowards building a new economic chain based on local fisheries potential\nin the island regency.<\/p>\n
The development is a follow-up to the results of the 2025 TEP IPB\nUniversity study. The findings are now being translated into action\nresearch on a farming business scale.<\/p>\n
\u201cAccording to the TEP IPB University study, catfish and tilapia\ncommodities are considered to have fairly strong market prospects in\nSimeulue,\u201d said Irzal Efendi.<\/p>\n
Irzal Efendi said catfish development is designed in an integrated\nmanner, from hatchery and nursery to grow-out. The technology used\nincludes tarpaulin-lined ponds and round tanks.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are also planning to use superior broodstock brought in from\nBanda Aceh as well as developing feed independently,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
In addition to freshwater aquaculture, Irzal Efendi said the marine\nsector in Simeulue is also an important focus of the programme,\nespecially lobster development. The waters of Simeulue have long been\nknown as one of the areas in the supply chain for puerulus or clear\nlobster seed.<\/p>\n
This potential is considered to need further development so that its\neconomic value does not stop at raw commodities, but can provide greater\nbenefits for the local community.<\/p>\n
The development offered is lobster nursery rearing to a size of\naround 10\u201350 grams per individual. The aquaculture development is also\nconsidered relevant to policy changes regarding the trade in clear\nlobster seed.<\/p>\n
Land-based aquaculture technology allows nursery activities to be\ncarried out on land using tanks with a recirculating aquaculture system\n(RAS).<\/p>\n
\u201cMeanwhile at sea, development can be carried out through floating\nnet cages, submerged nets, or seabed net cages. This opens up\nopportunities for Simeulue to become a production area for\nhigh-economic-value fishery commodities,\u201d said Irzal Efendi.<\/p>\n
The Expert Staff to the Simeulue Regent for Economic, Financial and\nDevelopment Affairs, Kasirman, welcomed the development of freshwater\naquaculture and lobster farming.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe hope that the development of lobster and freshwater fish farming\nwill not stop as a pilot project, but will develop into an economic\nchain that provides direct benefits to the community,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
He said the fisheries aquaculture development could become a\nsustainable economic tap for the community, especially in transmigration\nareas on Simeulue Island.<\/p>\n
