The Government of Pati Regency, Central Java, is committed to\noptimising the absorption of farmers\u2019 salt following an abundant\nproduction entering the main harvest season, which has impacted the\ndecline in the selling price of the commodity at the farmer level.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Pati Regency Government will certainly optimise the existence of\nindustry and people\u2019s salt storage warehouses to help absorb farmers\u2019\nproduction,\u201d said Hadi Santosa, Head of the Marine and Fisheries Service\n(DKP) of Pati Regency, in Pati on Sunday.<\/p>\n
According to him, the existence of PT Sarana Pembangunan Jawa Tengah\n(SPJT), an industrial salt processing plant in Raci Village, Batangan\nDistrict, Pati Regency, can be optimised to help absorb farmers\u2019\nsalt.<\/p>\n
In addition, he said, in Pati Regency there are also three people\u2019s\nwarehouses plus five existing warehouses.<\/p>\n
All these facilities can be optimised to increase the absorption of\nlocal salt.<\/p>\n
In Pati Regency, he continued, there is also a salt cooperative whose\ntask is to help absorb the production of salt farmers.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe existence of village cooperatives can also be collaborated with,\nso that it can help improve the welfare of salt farmers,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Hadi revealed that salt productivity in this year\u2019s dry season has\nactually decreased compared to the previous dry season.<\/p>\n
This condition is influenced by the soil in the salt production area\nwhich still tends to be wet after previously experiencing a fairly long\nrainy season.<\/p>\n
As a result, the salt production process takes longer, so that\nfarmers\u2019 productivity has decreased.<\/p>\n
Ali Muntoha, a salt farmer from Ketitang Wetan Village, Batangan\nDistrict, Pati, acknowledged that the current dry season is not like\nprevious years, because the soil on the salt production land tends to be\nfresh, causing the salt production process to take longer.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf previously within three days we could harvest, now it takes up to\nfour days because the hot steam from the ground is not optimal because\nbesides being fresh, the soil also tends to be wet. Meanwhile, the\nharvest yield has also dropped to 1 quintal from previously 1.5\nquintals,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
According to Ali, this condition can be felt from the hot temperature\non the production land. If previously at around 10.00 to 11.00 WIB the\nhot temperature was already quite high, currently the heat produced by\nthe soil at that time is not yet optimal.<\/p>\n
Besides the productivity issue, farmers are also facing low salt\nabsorption. Salt consumption manufacturing companies are said to have\nnot yet received raw material supplies from farmers, impacting the\nselling price at the farmer level.<\/p>\n
Ali said the price of salt, which previously reached Rp1,100 per\nkilogram, has now dropped to around Rp700 per kilogram.<\/p>\n
Despite the price decline, he acknowledged that salt farmers still\nmake a profit.<\/p>\n
According to him, the more important thing is that the government\ndoes not import salt so that people\u2019s salt production still has the\nopportunity to be absorbed by the domestic industry.<\/p>\n
