Pathway to Australian study<\/p>\n
Outstanding pedigrees back Uniprep's core services of
\npreparing local high school graduates to enter Australian
\nuniversities.<\/p>\n
Run by the private university UniSadhuGuna in Jakarta, it is a
\npartnership with Monash University, Victoria, and The University
\nof New South Wales (UNSW), two of Australia's most distinguished
\nhigher education institutions.<\/p>\n
During a tour of its facilities located in Kuningan, South
\nJakarta, Uniprep's Director Mark Taylor said, \"We're giving
\nIndonesian and international students here the equivalent of the
\npreparation they would obtain in Australia for entering
\nuniversity.\"<\/p>\n
On site are a library, including audiovisual facilities, a
\nstaffed computer center, a student lounge and career counseling
\nto steer students in the right direction for their future.<\/p>\n
Students are allocated to one of the streams of study --
\nBusiness\/Humanities, Science\/Engineering\/Computing and Design --
\naccording to their study interest.<\/p>\n
All students take Academic English, which provides them with
\nan understanding of and proficiency in academic English to cope
\nsuccessfully with the demands of studying at an Australian
\nuniversity.<\/p>\n
It covers oral presentations, tutorial discussions, note-
\ntaking in lectures, critical analysis and summarization of
\nacademic texts and writing academic essays.<\/p>\n
Students are assessed throughout their courses, with an exam
\nat the end of the first semester and a final examination. A
\nletter grade or associated grade point is awarded.<\/p>\n
All lecturers are expatriates, with several Indonesian tutors.<\/p>\n
The quality of the education offered is verified by the two
\nAustralian universities by sending their staff to Jakarta twice a
\nyear for quality assurance. Students' grades are also determined
\nby UNSW.<\/p>\n
Statistics show the success of the program in preparing
\nstudents for study in Australia -- since the program began in
\nAugust 1994, 84 percent of Uniprep students have met Australian
\nuniversity entry requirements. Of this number, 84 percent were
\noffered places at either Monash or UNSW.<\/p>\n
Uniprep graduates also have gone on to study at The Australian
\nNational University, Curtin University, Deakin University, James
\nCook University, La Trobe, The Queensland University of
\nTechnology, The Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology and The
\nUniversity of Melbourne.<\/p>\n
In June, Uniprep will add a Design stream for students
\nplanning tertiary studies in Design or Architecture, for example.<\/p>\n
While some people may say Uniprep is crazy to be starting up a
\nnew course at this time, Taylor believes Uniprep can better meet
\nstudents' needs with such specialized courses.<\/p>\n
With many parents and students concerned by the possibility of
\nunrest in Indonesia, Uniprep is able to assure all its students
\nthey will be able to transfer to the equivalent program in
\nSydney, if necessary.<\/p>\n
The Jakarta program also offers an important scheduling
\nadvantage over its Australian counterparts.<\/p>\n
\"We can offer the program to students as soon as they finish
\nschool in June and they are ready to start university in
\nAustralia in January. If they went to Sydney or Melbourne for the
\nFoundation Studies they would start university one semester
\nlater,\" Taylor said.<\/p>\n
Assistant Director of Studies John Olney added that Jakarta
\nUniprep students benefited from smaller class sizes.<\/p>\n
\"The programs are the same as those in Australia, but there is
\nmore personalized attention here,\" Olney said. \"We encourage
\nstudents to use critical thinking skills and to approach staff if
\nthey have questions, which may not be usual in the Indonesian
\neducation system.\"<\/p>\n
Uniprep alumni praise the program for preparing them for the
\nrigors of Australian academic life.<\/p>\n
\"Uniprep was a big help,\" said one graduate now studying
\nSocial Science and Policy at UNSW. \"While all students feel
\nconfused about uni life, Uniprep had already told us what to do,
\nsuch as how to listen to lectures, what to do in tutorials and
\nhow to communicate with lecturers and tutors.\"<\/p>\n
