PATA's environmental plan<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA)
\nlaunched the "Green Leaf" environmental awards program yesterday,
\ndesigned to promote environmentally-sensitive business practices.<\/p>\n
PATA's chairman Joop Ave, at the opening of the eighth meeting
\nof the organization's Asian chapters yesterday, said that Green
\nLeaf status will be awarded to companies and organizations
\ninvolved in the travel and tourism industry that meet PATA
\nstandards for environmentally-responsible tourism.<\/p>\n
Joop, who is also Indonesian Minister of Tourism, Post and
\nTelecommunications, said travelers can support the program by
\npurchasing from companies which have achieved "Green" status.<\/p>\n
In 1995, PATA will issue a brochure with tips on how to travel
\nin an environmentally responsible way. The publication will also
\nfeature a listing of companies and organizations that have earned
\nPATA Green Leaf status.<\/p>\n
Joop said the program will be supervised by a panel of
\nindustry leaders and environmentalists.(icn)<\/p>",
