PATA membership needed<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant
\nAssociation's (PHRI) Bali chapter has asked the government to
\nmaintain Indonesia's membership in the international tourism
\norganization Pacific-Asia Travel Association (PATA).<\/p>\n
"Quitting from PATA will negatively affect Indonesia's tourism
\nsector. The sector is expected to help start the recovery of the
\ncountry's economy," PHRI Bali branch president I Gede Wiratha was
\nquoted by Antara as saying on Friday.<\/p>\n
Gede, however, said that Bali would not be much affected by
\nthe government-planned move, but he was concerned about other
\nprovinces, such as Lampung and Irian Jaya, where tourism
\nindustries are still at the development stage.<\/p>\n
"If it is only because of the US$36,000 annual membership fee,
\nit is so ridiculous to quit the association. The government could
\ntalk to the big players in the hotel industry in Jakarta or
