PATA forum concludes

SEOUL (JP): The 43rd annual conference of the Pacific Asia
\nTravel Association (PATA) concluded here yesterday with a call
\nfor countries all over the world to promote tourism as the
\nbusiness of peace.<\/p>\n
Indonesian Minister of Tourism, Post and Telecommunications
\nJoop Ave, who was appointed yesterday as the new chairman of PATA
\nto replace Roland Cobbold, said participants of the three-day
\nconference called upon all nations to recognize the travel
\nindustry as an institution for free movement of people across
\nborders and as a potent force for world peace.<\/p>\n
PATA is a pioneering agent of peace, he said.<\/p>\n
The conference closed here last night with a gala dinner at
\nthe Grand Hyatt Hotel.<\/p>\n
Joop said the organization is appealing to governments all
\nover the world to guarantee the safety of visiting tourists, who
\noffer foreign exchange earnings for them.<\/p>\n
He said the conference decided to hold its 44th annual
\nconference in Auckland, New Zealand, on April 23-27, 1995, with
\nthe theme "Profiting through Responsibility."<\/p>\n
In the same month, PATA will also hold a Travel Mart in
\nSydney, Australia, and a Chapter World Congress on Fiji in the
\nSouth Pacific.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Indonesian Director General of Tourism Andi Mappi
\nSammeng, who accompanied Joop at the conference, told The Jakarta
\nPost that the Indonesian and South Korean governments have agreed
\nto promote cooperation in the tourism industry.<\/p>\n
"The two governments aim at increasing the frequency of
\nflights between their countries to facilitate the traveling of
\ntheir people," he said.<\/p>\n
Korean Airlines serves the Seoul-Jakarta route three times a
\nweek, while Garuda Indonesia serves the route five times weekly.<\/p>\n
Improved flight services are expected to boost tourism between
\nthe two countries, Andi said.<\/p>\n
Almost 85,000 South Koreans visited Indonesia in 1992, while
\nmore than 28,000 Indonesians toured South Korea.<\/p>",
