The government is preparing a long-term strategy to tackle the\nrecurring congestion at Ketapang Port. Most recently, a traffic jam\nstretching up to 7 kilometres occurred at the port at the end of June,\nfollowing queues of tens of kilometres during the middle of last\nyear.<\/p>\n
Minister of Transportation Dudy Purwagandhi stated that freight and\npassenger services will be separated. The separation is expected to be\nimplemented no later than before the 2027 Eid transport period, thereby\nsmoothing vehicle flow as freight and passenger activities will no\nlonger be concentrated at a single port. Ketapang Port\u2019s capacity will\nalso be increased in stages to accommodate the growth in vehicle and\nlogistics traffic.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe want to separate freight and passenger transport services, as we\nhave done at Merak-Bakauheni, and we will do it at Ketapang-Gilimanuk.\nThe hope is that with this separation, traffic will not be concentrated\nin just one port,\u201d Dudy told the media.<\/p>\n
Dudy explained that the recent long queues on the Ketapang-Gilimanuk\ncrossing were triggered by disruptions to the operation of large\nvessels. This situation caused some journeys to be diverted to the port\nmanaged by PT ASDP Indonesia Ferry, resulting in limited service\ncapacity.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe congestion at Ketapang-Gilimanuk occurred because a large ship\nwas damaged, so journeys were diverted to the port managed by ASDP. One\nof the obstacles is limited capacity. We have asked ASDP to immediately\ncoordinate with the East Java Provincial Government so that equipment\nrepairs can be carried out promptly and the facilities can be used\nagain,\u201d Dudy said.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, ASDP President Director Heru Widodo said his party has\ncoordinated with the East Java Provincial Government to accelerate\nseveral required works while also planning port development up to 2029.\nThe plan includes increasing the capacity of several piers, optimising\nthe Bulusan area as a buffer zone for logistics vehicles, constructing\nconnecting access roads, and building new piers to strengthen\noperational smoothness on the Ketapang-Gilimanuk crossing.<\/p>\n
\u201cPier capacity increases will also be carried out in stages starting\nthis year as part of strengthening services on the Ketapang-Gilimanuk\nroute. The plan is designed to meet current traffic needs while\nanticipating the growth in vehicle flow in the coming years,\u201d Heru said\nin a statement.<\/p>\n
Heru added that port infrastructure development is not sufficient if\nit only involves adding pier capacity. The arrangement of ship operating\npatterns, provision of buffer areas, and traffic management outside the\nport area must also be carried out in an integrated manner to keep pace\nwith increasing public mobility and logistics distribution. \u201cKetapang\nPort is not just a crossing gate for Java-Bali, but a strategic node\nthat supports national connectivity.
