Paskah faces fake diploma rumors<\/p>\n
BANDUNG: A week after being installed as State Minister for
\nNational Development Planning (Bappenas) Paskah Suzetta is
\nbusy fending off allegations he holds fake diplomas.<\/p>\n
Unnamed political rivals within the Golkar Party -- of which
\nhe is a senior member -- circulated last week rumors through
\nseveral media publications that the former senior lawmaker held
\nfake university certificates, including MBA certificates from
\nJakarta-based STIE IPWI and Bandung-based Padjajaran University.<\/p>\n
Paskah quickly denied the rumors, saying he had obtained a
\nbachelor's degree in social and political sciences from West
\nJava's Garut University in 1990 -- confirmed by the private
\nuniversity on Friday -- but had no diploma from the IPWI because
\nhe never studied there. He, however, stopped short of clarifying
\nwhether he had a diploma from the prestigious Padjajaran
\nUniversity.<\/p>\n
On Saturday, university spokesperson Evi Ariatne said the
\nuniversity had never issued a master's degree diploma for Paskah.
\nShe acknowledged that the minister registered in 2001 for a five-
\nsemester master in business administration program, but said he
\nhad never completed it.<\/p>\n
The appointment of Paskah, previously a Golkar lawmaker in the
\nHouse of Representatives finance commission, as Bappenas chief in
\nthe Dec. 5 Cabinet reshuffle was said to be the result of
\nnegotiations between President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Vice
\nPresident Jusuf Kalla -- whose Golkar Party had to let go of the
\nchief economics ministerial post -- but was criticized by some as
\nPaskah's academic background was not sufficient for the post. --
