Pasar Baru traders complain over rents<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Traders operating at the Pasar Baru shopping
\ncenter have reported the center's management to the city council
\nfor imposing unfair rents.<\/p>\n
Three traders claiming to represent 31 colleagues operating on
\nthe Metro pedestrian bridge in the shopping center said yesterday
\nthat the center's management, PT Yakin Wiskon, set higher fees
\nfor 'new' traders.<\/p>\n
The management sealed off shops last month after traders
\nrefused to pay higher rents which were effective from November
\n1995.<\/p>\n
Nelly, a spokesperson for the traders, said that management
\nhad imposed two different leases on traders.<\/p>\n
Those considered to be 'new' traders were charged Rp 175
\nmillion (US$76,086) per shop for a 15 year lease: new traders
\nwere classified as those who leased their shops 13 years ago, she
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Their leases expired last year. They refused to pay new leases
\nand their shops were sealed off.<\/p>\n
'Old' traders were classified as those who leased their shops
\nwhen the center's bridge opened in 1990. They were charged only
\nRp 125 million per shop for a 15 year lease.<\/p>\n
\"This is not fair,\" Nelly told commission B in charge of local
\neconomic affairs. There is only a two year difference between the
\nnew and old traders.<\/p>\n
The commission, chaired by Subagyo Partodihardjo, told the
\ntraders that it would summon the shopping center's management to
